Mill Hill has history and art
Mill Hill, a historic neighborhood located in Downtown Trenton, has a diverse community that walks the sidewalks to locally owned businesses and restaurants. People from around New Jersey visit in December to join in the Patriots Week festivities. The local art community also thrives here with the Trenton Film Society and Artworks Trenton visual art center. The Old Mill Historical Society continues to support the neighborhood and raise funds to keep the historic buildings in top shape. “People of all ages come into the library. Teens visit for movie nights, kids come in for reading activities and adults stay for workshops,” says Robert Schenker, a librarian at the Trenton Free Public Library. Residents have access to downtown amenities, historic sites and homes with Federal designs.

Federal homes and condos at the Whittaker
Historic homes with Federal and Italianate designs and brick condos fill Mill Hill’s streets. Most historic homes have been renovated to give residents modern amenities within these classic structures. The community and the Old Mill Hill Historical Society make a concerted effort to preserve the neighborhood’s original character but still bring it into the modern era. A truly historic neighborhood, Mill Hill features late 19th-century architecture, with many homes being built in the mid to late 1800s. Some pay $120,000 to $200,000 for a two-bedroom condo, while a townhouse or semi-detached area can cost $315,000 to $425,000.
Most residents rent their homes, but future homebuyers have opportunities to buy townhouses or single-family units. These homes sit flush against the paved sidewalks that wind throughout the area, making street parking a must for those who drive. Those living in the Whittaker at Mill Hill condos can access parking areas. Multiple investment opportunities sit throughout the neighborhood for anyone looking for a future rental property.

See history come alive during Patriots Week
Mill Hill has hosted an annual Holiday House Tour each December, a beloved tradition started in 1967 featuring home tours of the neighborhood’s festive homes. Visitors can partake in tours, holiday music, refreshments and community-building moments. Mill Hill also features a garden tour for visitors in the late spring. The Old Mill Hill Society runs both tours to raise money and support the Trenton Landmarks Commission for Historic Preservation Standards. Patriots Week also brings in visitors from across New Jersey to Mill Hill for the Battle of Trenton reenactments and events at nearby museums.
Artists thrive in Mill Hill with the Mill Hill Playhouse, a performing arts center adjacent to Mill Hill Park utilized by the Passage Theatre Company. Locals visit year-round to see winter holiday productions, play readings and even premier new works. The Artworks Trenton offers exhibitions, educational opportunities and events. This visual arts center also offers public art projects to the community.
Getting out at Clay Street Park

Starting the day at Sunrise Luncheonette
Hungry locals pay cash at Sunrise Luncheonette for home-style dishes during brunch or lunch. Tracey’s Kitchen serves big portions of soul food. Others walk into Gyro Express to pick up lamb platters or freshly wrapped gyros. Schenker says the corner stores are often locally owned, and residents get to know the owners when they visit. When locals need to stock up on groceries for the week, they shop at stores like Colonial Farms or Rosalia Food Market. For a more traditional grocery setting, residents drive or take the bus up to the Superfood Market of Trenton near U.S. Route 31.
