South Trenton mixes modern and historic sensibilities
South Trenton snakes along the Delaware River, with interstates and highways behind it. It’s a sliver populated with modern brick townhouse complexes, which sit next to dwellings from the late 19th century and early 20th century. These expansions to the residential landscape have accommodated changes to the neighborhood’s make up as well – helping it turn into a spot that homebuyers seek out as they move away from Philadelphia and other nearby localities in Northern New Jersey. “They were paying high rent prices and realized they could come here and get more house for their money and own instead of rent," says Fareeda Stokes, a Realtor with Harkes Realty & Associates. It’s part of a bigger wave to give Trenton a new identity – something beyond a post-industrial city with potential in the wings. “A lot of the areas around Trenton are revitalizing and moving away from old associations,” says Rana Bernhard, a Realtor with Weichert Realtors.
South Trenton has preserved some of the historic industrial equipment that made the area famous.

Townhouses, brick rowhouses and multi-story two-family dwellings
Two-bedroom and three-bedroom townhouses overlook tree-lined sidewalks, presenting a façade that mixes brick and siding. The layouts are often multi-story, so stairs are a prominent feature, and outside there’s occasionally an attached one-car garage. Prices range from $185,000 to $325,000. Within that range are historic brick rowhouses that reveal South Trenton’s original character. These properties line stretches like Second Street, which are capped by tiny playgrounds, locally owned delis or other small businesses, evoking a tightknit urban setting. In the $300,000 to $585,000 range, there are assorted multi-story two-family properties that are also from the late 19th century or early 20th century. Some of these have been extensively renovated in the 2020s, offering up bold colors, while others retain original features, like covered front porches with brick columns.

South Trenton is considered the city's restaurant district
South Trenton’s evolving identity includes sizable populations from around the world, including Poland and Puerto Rico. This informs the dining scene, and some refer to South Trenton as the city’s Restaurant District. Cooper’s Riverview is on the Delaware River, as the name suggests. Seafood is on the menu, of course, and the venue is known for frequent events, from dance nights to rock concerts hosted by tribute bands. Malaga on Lalor Street has events, too – mainly flamenco performances. Housed in a white stucco building with terra cotta roof, this restaurant serves meat and seafood entrees alongside sangria. Lalor Plaza shopping mall has a Supreme Food Market for groceries. Scattered throughout the rest of the neighborhood are small pizza places and Latin American eateries.

Small parks throughout the landscape offer frequent opportunities for leisure. Spots like Second Street Playground are tucked near residential stretches, offering playground structures and basketball courts. South Riverwalk Park is a place to catch views of the Delaware and read interpretive signs that guide visitors through the history of Trenton. The trail terminates at Trenton Thunder Park, formerly an affiliate of the New York Yankees. For a longer hike, strollers can start at Lalor Street Park near Riverview Cemetery. It features sculptures, like arches made of mixed materials.

Trenton Transit Center is just over a mile away
“South Trenton’s location in proximity to New York City, Philadelphia and Jersey Shore is prime for people who enjoy going to those specific areas but don't want to deal with the congestion of living there," Stokes says. Route 1 crosses the Delaware, getting residents across the Pennsylvania state line in minutes. Broad flanks the east side, helping residents get to Interstates 195 and 295. Or, there’s the opportunity to take state Route 29 on the south side to these interstates. The best place to pick up a bus is on state Route 129, which runs through the middle of the neighborhood. The Trenton Transit Center is just over a mile north, providing train service to Philadelphia in about 30 minutes and New York City in about an hour and a half. The neighborhood scores a 7 out of 10 on the CAP Index crime index, above the national average of 4. Motor vehicle theft, burglary and other violent crimes are cited as problems here, but the city hired more police officers at the beginning of 2024 and state officials have reported that crime is decreasing.
