Rural living defines Mouth of Wilson
Mouth of Wilson’s winding roads surrounded by pasture land and country homes cut through the Blue Ridge Highlands, a setting synonymous with Middle Appalachia living. “It’s a rural, agricultural area, and it's very sparsely populated,” says Joan Collins, broker and owner of Collins & Associates, who has 18 years of selling experience in the area. Without leaving the community, residents can fish the New River and hike the numerous trails at Grayson Highlands State Park. A lack of commercial development adds to the area's rustic air, while surrounding towns and cities cover shopping and dining needs.
From fishing and boating to mountaintop hikes with ponies
“There are lots of things to do for people who like the outdoors,” Collins says. “There’s trout fishing on multiple streams and the New River.” The Mouth of Wilson Boat Ramp grants local fishermen access to the river, where they can hook bass, walleye and carp. Grayson Highlands State Park fills the community’s northwestern corner. Wildlife is abundant across the park, from the birds and flora along its hiking trails, to the wild ponies that roam the peaks of the state’s two tallest mountains. The park's Hickory Ridge Campground is currently under renovation, with plans to reopen in May of 2026.
Homes come in a variety of styles and many come with plenty of acreage
In Mouth of Wilson, architecture ranges from cottages and farmhouses to ranch and cabin styles. Some of these properties have stood since the mid-1800s. Homes either sit within the forest or atop rolling hills where tall grass grows between openings in wooden and wire fencing. “There are lots of larger parcels for dairy cows, beef cattle, Christmas trees, timber and those sorts of things,” Collins says. Acreage in the area ranges between a half-acre and 40-plus acres. While a property's size, condition, and acreage can impact pricing, the community's median home price is $538,000. The community also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Locals do most of their shopping and dining in surrounding communities
Residents go to different areas to shop depending on where they live. “There are several little stores for small items,” Collins says about Wilson Market and Fox Creek General Store, which doubles as a laid-back breakfast and lunch diner. Independence toward the east has Food City and a handful of locally owned shops and restaurants like Ciro's Pizza & Subs, known for its giant calzones. Collins says most will make the 29-mile trip northwest into Marion for their big-box shopping. The town is home to Walmart Supercenter, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and a handful of others.
