A developing historic community in Trumbull
History and progress intertwine in Nichols. Set along the rolling hills of Connecticut within the town of Trumbull, the village preserves its farmland heritage while continuing to foster a strong community. The Nichols Improvement Association, which was formed in the late1800s, and the Trumbull Historical Society spearhead development and preservation. “There’s a real sense of community here,” says Jeffrey Craw, a Realtor with William Raveis who's lived in the area for over 30 years. “Residents benefit from a great school system and a wonderful mix of family events put on by the NIA that pull the community together.” Historic colonial-style homes anchor the neighborhood to its past, while popular shopping centers and convenient access to the Merritt Parkway keep residents connected to modern life. The comfortable atmosphere is reflected in the neighborhood's low CAP Index crime score, which is 1 out of 10.

Historic colonials and newer Colonial Revivals
Showcasing the village's history, traditional, established homes sit along Huntington Turnpike and Shelton Road, which is part of the Nichols Farms Historic District. “These main arteries in town feature some of the beautiful and maintained historic homes, some dating back to the 1800s,” Craw says. In the rest of Nichols, classic homes with large, shaded yards line the streets. Ranch-style properties are intermixed with bi-levels and large, cool-toned Colonial Revivals, most of which were built in the mid-to-late 1900s. Home prices start around $450,000 and rise to around $800,000, though the largest Colonial Revivals can cost as much as $1.1 million.

Walking paths and swimming pools near Nichols
The only park in Nichols is suitably named Abraham Nichols Park, a small green space with short walking trails and a community garden. However, Fredda Takacs, a longtime Trumbull resident and real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty, says that one of the major appeals of Nichols is that it’s close to other popular recreation areas, like Twin Brooks Park. Just 2 miles west of the neighborhood, Twin Brooks has walking trails that meander in the woods, through grass fields and by small waterways. Children climb on the jungle gym at the playground, and anglers go fishing in the ponds. A little north of the park is the Robert G. Beach Memorial Pool, where Trumbull residents swim in the summer. “There’s also Pinewood Lake, which has a private association, but you can elect to be an outside member even if you don’t live on the lake,” Takacs says. “Of course, there’s a yearslong waiting list.” Members can launch watercraft with electric motors, lounge at the beach or go fishing.

Retail shopping at Trumbull Mall
The western section of Nichols is filled with corporate office buildings, but residents also live near two shopping centers. Shoppers go to the Hawley Lane Mall to peruse the aisles at Target or Kohl’s, or head to the Shelton Square Shopping Center for retailers like T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods. Supermarkets like Shop & Shop and Big Y World Class Market make grocery shopping convenient. To eat out, many drive 3 miles northeast to Shelton, where they can order sushi and drunken noodles from Red Lotus, a regional chain. The Spotted Horse Tavern is a popular American restaurant nearby, where diners enjoy wings and lobster rolls as a fireplace crackles in the dining room. For elevated Italian dishes, there's Il Palio.

The Nichols Improvement Association hosts community events
The Nichols Improvement Association, which charges an annual membership fee of $45 for an individual or $75 for a household, organizes community events and programs. Neighbors celebrate holidays together, with an Easter egg hunt in the spring and a Halloween parade in October. In December, joggers don festive running gear to participate in the annual Jingle Bell Run 5K; there’s also a short kids’ run and an untimed 1.25-mile walk. Residents can also compete in the neighborhood’s adult kickball league in the summer, or send their kids to Camp Starkweather, a children’s summer camp where kids explore nature, play games and make crafts.

Merritt Parkway connects drivers to New Haven and Manhattan
Like many other Fairfield County neighborhoods, Nichols is a common home base for commuters who travel outside of Trumbull for work. “We’ve had a lot of New Yorkers move here since 2020, but we’ve also seen a lot of doctors who work at Yale relocate here,” Takacs says. These residents connect with the Merritt Parkway and then Interstate 95 to drive 18 miles northeast to New Haven or 70 miles southwest to New York City. Another option is to park and board the New Haven commuter rail line in Bridgeport; the station is about 6 miles south.
