Spacious homes near plenty of outdoor recreation in Trumbull
Suburban Trumbull neighborhoods like Tashua used to be where homebuyers ended up when they couldn’t afford to buy in Fairfield, but now it’s many people’s first choice. "People overlook Fairfield and actually want to move to Trumbull now," says Fredda Takacs, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty who’s lived in Trumbull for decades. “And in Tashua, not only can you get a cheaper home with more land, but the Trumbull school system is phenomenal." She says that demand in Trumbull has been high since 2019, with most homes receiving at least four or five offers. Part of the appeal includes Tashua’s spacious lawns and well-kept Colonial Revivals, which create a peaceful atmosphere, as do the numerous wooded parks and public golf courses nearby. Tashua also has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, which is the lowest possible score.
Colonials, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes
Most of Tashua’s quiet streets curve through groves of trees, with a couple of roads encircling Canoe Brook Lake, allowing for direct water access. “Tashua offers closer to one-acre lots, and the developments are a little newer than the rest of Trumbull, so the prices tend to be a little higher,” Takacs says. Long driveways and spacious grass lawns with precise landscaping accompany mid-to-late 20th-century homes. Ranch-style houses and older or smaller Colonial Revivals are usually priced between $500,000 and $800,000. But larger Colonial Revivals built in the early 2000s cost more, with prices ranging from $900,000 to $1.3 million.

Swimming and golfing at the Tashua Recreation Area
Outdoor recreation is a focal point, and Takacs says that the Tashua Knoll Recreation Area is particularly popular. During the summer, locals lounge by the park’s public pool or meet for matches on the pickleball or tennis courts. Younger kids run around the playground while teenagers play basketball. But the park’s most notable feature is the public golf course, which has an 18-hole and a 9-hole course. “The golf course is well-regarded. People come from all over the state to golf there,” Takacs says. Those living around the private Canoe Brook Lake go fishing, swimming and kayaking on the man-made waterway. Tashua is located in the inland town of Trumbull, but the beaches on the Long Island Sound are only about 15 miles south. Trumbull residents can buy a Fairfield beach parking sticker to park and enjoy the sandy shores at Jennings or Penfield Beach.

A-rated schools in Trumbull
Kids may begin at the neighborhood elementary school, Tashua School, which scores an A rating from Niche. Students can continue learning at Madison Middle School, rated an A-minus, and then progress to Trumbull High School, rated an A. “Trumbull is a big enough town that all the different niches at the high school are top-notch, whether it’s the football team, swim team, debate club or marching band,” Takacs says. The high school has an array of other clubs, including a literary and art magazine called “Creative Minds,” a school newspaper, a stock market club and a coding club.
Upscale dining on Main Street
One of the only places to go out to eat in Tashua is Eagle’s Nest Bar & Grill, the restaurant in the Tashua Knolls Golf Course that serves classic American fare, like burgers, wings and fries. About 2 miles east, on Main Street, locals can order sushi or dumplings from Mici Asian Bistro. Close by, elevated Italian dishes are accompanied by glasses of wine at Ecco Wine Bar. For groceries, supermarkets like Stop & Shop and Aldi are both under 4 miles away. The Trumbull Mall has well-known retailers like Target and Macy’s.

Commuters head toward New Haven or New York City
The Merritt Parkway carves through Trumbull; commuters drive just south of Tashua to merge onto the roadway, which takes drivers about 22 miles northeast to New Haven and about 70 miles southwest to New York City. To limit the time spent sitting in dense traffic, most headed to Manhattan opt to take a commuter train operated by the Metro-North Railroad. The Bridgeport train station, where people board the New Haven line, is 10 miles south of the neighborhood.
Seasonal gatherings and a town-wide carnival
Tashua residents join their neighbors for seasonal events near Trumbull Town Hall. On Tuesday evenings, the community clusters around the gazebo at the town green for free summer concerts. People return in September to support local artists during Trumbull’s art festival, where booths displaying jewelry, handbags, wooden carvings and paintings fill the lawn. There’s a fall festival in October where kids play games and work on seasonal crafts, and the town lights a holiday tree in early December.
All of Trumbull looks forward to the town festival Trumbull Day, in early June, when carnival rides and games pop up in the field behind Hillcrest Middle School. Residents listen to bands play as they ride the Ferris wheel and snack on beer and kettle corn.
