A residential community close to highways and Lulah Hills

Lindmoor Woods-Valley Brook Estates is a suburban community near schools, highways and a soon-to-be commercial destination. "If you are in that first-time homebuyer price range, this is an ideal spot to look at because of the new development [nearby]," says David Pruett, a Realtor with Ansley Real Estate Christie's International and a previous Decatur resident. "They've torn down the North DeKalb Mall and began building a massive, mixed-use development. It's going to be called the Lulah Hills. It's a huge thing, and that's a big change for that part of town." The area earns its name from the Valley Brook Estates subdivision to the west and Lindmoor Woods to the east.

A mix of housing options in Lindmoor Woods-Valley Brook Estates

The area has a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and apartment complexes. Most detached residences are single-story or split-level houses perched on gently sloping lots. "There are a lot of 1960s and 1970s style ranches that can offer a great opportunity to get into a single-family home. Most of them will need a little updating," Pruett says. The community also includes New Traditional homes from the early 2000s. Some of the most recent properties are inside the gated Lindmoor Row subdivision. Two-bedroom condos and townhouses generally range between $130,000 and $240,000. Larger attached units can range from $415,000 to $600,000. Most move-in ready houses and updated dwellings can cost between $300,000 and $600,000.

Attending Druid Hills schools and Emory University

Young children attend nearby schools located about a mile from home. Students enroll in Laurel Ridge Elementary, which has a B-plus rating from Niche. Druid Hills Middle receives a B. Druid Hills High, about 6 miles away, has an A-minus. The school provides over 35 after-school activities, including clubs for crochet, drama, graphics and karaoke. According to Niche, the middle and high schools are among the county's top public schools. Driving past the high school leads locals to Emory University. The institution is among the top universities in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Locals are ITP and can easily get around the region

"It's great because you're still ITP, inside the perimeter of Atlanta," Pruett says. "You're close to the highway and Tucker, which is booming right now." Bus stops are found along Lawrenceville Highway. The highway and U.S. 78 border the community's northern and southern sides. There are two Interstate 285 interchanges along the eastern edge. Emory University Hospital is 5 miles from the neighborhood.

Goats, expanding park spaces and a tennis club

Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve is a 23-acre wetland surrounded by suburbs. The public green space has trails through forests and swamplands. A herd of goats can be seen throughout the grounds a few months each year. The animals, managed by the nonprofit Applied Ecology Project, act as a natural poison ivy control on the preserve. Nearby Montreal Park includes a playground and hiking trails; Tucker City Council recently purchased adjacent land to add to the green space. Lindmoor Woods Swim & Tennis Club offers a saline pool and two tennis courts through a yearly membership.

Retail off of Lawrenceville Highway

Shopping is concentrated to the southwest, along Lawrenceville Highway. Locals can find family-run storefronts like Kabul Market and Talar's Markt, in addition to a Publix Super Market at Shamrock Plaza. There are also casual dining options, such as Madras Mantra Decatur. The commercial corridor is also the site of the upcoming Lulah Hills development; the destination will contain stores, restaurants and multi-family homes. "The idea is that they want it to be similar to Avalon in Alpharetta, but for the Decatur area," Pruett says. "This will allow everyone in the Intown Atlanta market to have easy accessibility to a mixed-use development." More shops and restaurants await 5 miles away in downtown Decatur.
