Tiny Tucson neighborhood featuring city food staples
Set 2 miles from downtown, the small community of Barrio Hollywood offers culture, an active neighborhood association and accessibility to all city staples. “People ignored this side of town in Tucson for many years, and the people who are now figuring out it’s a hidden gem are buying it up like crazy,” says Tony Baker, Realtor for RE/MAX Professionals and Tucson native. In the early 1900s, Barrio Hollywood had only pueblo-style homes with dirt yards, but today the neighborhood features homes from the mid-20th century through early 2000s, as well as a few small parks. Neighbors here enjoy getting together for monthly, holiday and seasonal events at the nearby El Rio Golf Course, and famous Mexican mom-and-pop restaurants draw folks from all over.

Generational homes with adobe structure
Homes in Barrio Hollywood are more affordable than those in nearby areas like Dunbar/Spring and Feldman’s, and Baker says it’s normal for houses here to stay in families for multiple generations. Midcentury bungalows and pueblos-style homes with adobe facades average around $215,000 and feature chain-link-fenced backyards with covered patios. Larger pueblo homes built in the ‘40s and ‘50s, as well as early 2000s Spanish-Revival homes, range between $300,000 and $450,000; these properties include short, paved driveways with carports, and spacious, rock-landscaped front yards that lead out to narrow sidewalks. Laid out on a grid, the palm-dotted streets here offer views of the Santa Catalina foothills and lead to nearby parks and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Roman Catholic Church.
Each Barrio Hollywood is unique, with some being red brick, and others stucco.
Most of Barrio Hollywood features sidewalks for easy and safe walking.

Award-nominated cafés and other food classics in Barrio Hollywood
Within the community, residents can start the day with a cup of coffee from the 2024 James Beard Award-nominated Barista del Barrio, then enjoy a wrapped-up hot dog smothered in spicy chili at the popular Pat’s Chili Dogs. "Business executives out east will send an assistant all the way out here just to pick up chili dogs for a meeting,” Baker says. Nearby St. Mary’s Mexican Food offers authentic Hispanic cuisine like red-chile burros and chicken flautas, and a half mile west, St. Mary’s Plaza has a Safeway for groceries. Locals can drive about 2 miles south to MSA Annex shopping mall in the Mercado District for art pottery at La Cabana and bike repairs at Transit Cycles. Three miles further east, the Main Gate Square shopping area includes local businesses like Boutique 816 and Collette selling women’s clothing and accessories.

Jamming out to music at El Rio Golf Club
Every first Friday of the month, Barrio Hollywood locals drive half a mile to gather at the public El Rio Golf Club clubhouse for drinks and performances by local musicians at Open Mic Nights. Around October, the neighborhood also hosts their annual Art Show at El Rio, where local art vendors set up shop, local bands like Four Winds Drum Group perform and sculptors show off their work. Baker says that each November since 1989, locals have also flocked to the All Souls Procession at South Avenida del Convento (2 miles south); during this celebration of lost loved ones, thousands of people paint their faces, don flower crowns and parade along downtown streets while internationally known artists perform on a two-story stage.

Within the neighborhood, folks can walk to small community parks like the half-acre Seminole and Cherokee, both of which feature paved paths and small patches of turf. A mile south of the area, 10-acre Menlo Park features a basketball court, canopy-covered workout stations and a public pool with a 141-foot-long water slide.
