The “Lost Barrio” near downtown Tucson
Allegedly named for a Portuguese saint, the tiny, historic Barrio San Antonio is a desert respite just a few miles from downtown Tucson. “We used to know it as ‘The Lost Barrio’ because it’s surrounded by three major roads—Aviation Highway, South Kino Parkway and Broadway—and it’s kind of locked in a triangle,” says Tony Baker, Realtor at RE/MAX Professionals and Tucson native. “There's a world revolving inside that triangle, but it’s got limited access in and out.” Residents still manage to venture from the neighborhood for nearby shopping, rides on the Aviation Bikeway and Wildcat football games at Arizona Stadium next door.

Limited traffic on Barrio San Antonio’s streets
The neighborhood’s median home price of $375,000 is around $250,000 less than in downtown, and Baker says homeowners here enjoy the limited traffic. “There’s no through street, so people can’t cut in and speed by,” he says. Early 20th-century two-bedroom bungalows and pueblos with adobe exteriors and gated back yards typically range between $200,000 and $375,000. Midcentury bungalows and ranch-style homes with white and brown stucco exteriors are priced from $400,000 to $550,000; these four-bedroom homes pebbled front yards with narrow cement driveways. Properties in the neighborhood sit along dusty paved roads with speed bumps and sidewalks peppered with cacti. Homebuyers can even find brightly colored early 2000s lofts designed by famous local designer, Rob Paulus for upwards of $450,000.
