Bear Canyon
Suburban Neighborhood in Tucson, Arizona
Pima County 85749
Space, sizes and styles to choose from
Homebuyers looking for a gated community have a few choices in Bear Canyon. Subdivisions of spacious villas make up the neighborhood's eastern end, with Powder Horn Ranch and Lakes at Castle Rock being the most prominent. Powder Horn Ranch offers more spacious lots, while amenities, including a recreation center, a pool and lake views, enhance Lakes at Castle Rock. "Ranch-style homes along North Woodland Road have more space and are often horse properties since there is a large equestrian center nearby," Hassey says. Whatever the address, the vistas are panoramic, with common architectural styles, including Pueblo Revivals and Spanish Missions decorated with stucco painted in light earth tones to ward off the heat. Homes range from $450,000 to $3.5 million, with a median price shy of $600,000, higher than the Tucson average. Sidewalks line some developments, but cacti and desert fauna are all over the sundrenched streets.Escaping the heat in the summer months
Mount Lemmon is over 9,000 feet tall and always within view in Bear Canyon. "Living close to the mountain is a huge draw to the neighborhood," says Hassey, who has lived nearby for over 15 years. "During the winter, people head there to ski, and in the summer, they go up on the weekends to escape the heat. It's only a 40-minute drive to the peak." A short drive west leads to softball diamonds, soccer fields and more at Morris K Udall Park. Pickleball and volleyball courts are always busy in the evenings, and residents can utilize the public pool on hot summer days or set their dogs free at the attached dog park. In the neighborhood's southeastern corner, outdoor enthusiasts can walk along the 3-mile dirt trail at Isabella Lee Natural Preserve, a habitat for Sonoran Desert birds.Where students of Bear Canyon learn
Young children can attend Marguerite L. Collier Elementary School, which earns a B by Niche and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 17-1. Magee Middle serves 350 students and earns a B-minus rating. The middle school offers the Amazon Future Engineer Program, where students from underserved or underrepresented communities can learn foundational computer science skills over a three-year curriculum plan. After eighth grade, learners can head to Sabino High School, which earns an impressive B-plus grade.Getting to downtown Tucson
Plenty of acreage offers a sense of seclusion. Still, a major east-west thoroughfare, East Tanque Verde Road, conveniently lines the neighborhood. Dedicated bike paths and footpaths along the corridor add to the area's accessibility, bringing shopping, dining and recreation within easy reach of residents. Bear Canyon lacks public transportation, but commuters can drive to downtown Tucson or the Tucson International Airport in 30 minutes.Live music at the local watering hole
The Gardens at Bear Canyon offers an outdoor dining destination with an extensive beer selection, a scratch kitchen and craft cocktails. The outdoor space has bocce ball and regularly hosts live music events. Since 1982, Fortunato's Italian Deli has been the neighborhood's go-to spot for hot and cold sandwiches, classic sides and deli cuts by the pound. Heading west along East Tanque Verde leads to Bear Canyon Center and Madera Village, two commercial hubs featuring familiar supermarkets, retailers and restaurants.
