Diverse Tucson neighborhood close to city attractions

Drexel Park is a Tucson neighborhood that boasts diversity, its own school and proximity to some well-known attractions. This community between Irvington and Drexel roads neighbors two multi-use parks and sits down the street from a sporting venue that hosts one of the country’s top-rated rodeos. Additionally, several shopping and dining staples showcasing local Hispanic and Southwestern culture surround the area. That includes a specialty grocery store that carries snacks like the popular saladitos stuffed in lemons. “It’s convenient to a lot of shopping. That area, it’s growing quite a bit,” says Eunice Gillis, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker. “In comparison to other areas, you can get the same house … for a better price.”

Blocks densely packed with Craftsman and Spanish Revival homes

Homes on lots no larger than a quarter acre densely pack the neighborhood. The middle of the community mainly has single-story Craftsman-style homes, some of which come with small courtyards enclosed with concrete, stucco and brick fences and iron gates. The north side of Drexel Park has modern homes showing Spanish Revival designs. A manufactured home community — one of a few in this part of the city — and some apartment complexes also exist here. Home costs mostly run between $230,000 and $350,000. The neighborhood’s median price is nearly $100,000 below Tucson’s and well under those of several other suburban communities.

Plenty of options for Mexican street fare

The area is known for its authentic Mexican dining scene. Some restaurants also blend styles, as shown by Getsu-ko Mexican Sushi. Getsu-ko neighbors the Mei Hon Chinese Restaurant. Nearby Las Originales Carnitas el Michoacano is well known for its carnitas and other options like lime-sprinkled tacos. The Super Carniceria Mi Ranchito is a neighborhood grocer carrying fresh meats and items like table cream and michelada cups. A cluster of shopping centers a few blocks east have chain brands like Food City and Fry’s Food and Drug. “There’s a little bit of everything for everyone. Whether you’re looking for fast food or a locally owned restaurant, you’ll find a bit of everything around you,” Gillis says.

Rudy Garcia and El Pueblo parks’ multiple sports facilities

Overlooked by palms, Rudy Garcia Park spans approximately 45 acres. The site has baseball and softball fields and regularly hosts friendly basketball and volleyball games. The community also often comes out here to grill and organize picnics. Neighboring El Pueblo Park is home to a few recreation centers, one of which is geared toward elderly users. The indoor facilities form the Richard Ortiz Barker Regional Complex, and their amenities include an indoor basketball gym and a weight room.

February’s annual Tucson Rodeo

In February, the 36-acre site off South Sixth Avenue buzzes with excitement during the annual La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, otherwise known as the Tucson Rodeo. The event celebrated its centennial in 2025. Over several days in February, many deck themselves in Western wear to watch riding events and enjoy other activities like a barn dance and music festival.

Apollo Middle’s high school and career prep

The neighborhood is home to Drexel Elementary School, which gets a C-minus from Niche. Students may then attend nearby Apollo Middle School and Sunnyside High School, which respectively get C-minus and B-minus grades from Niche. Apollo students can participate in various programs to prepare them for the future. They include high school preparedness activities, virtual job shadowing and elective courses to learn about certain careers. Niche ranks Sunnyside Arizona’s 58th best high school for athletes, a standing backed by successes like the boys’ wrestling squad winning a 38th state title in 2025. Pima Community College also has an adult learning center in El Pueblo Park.

Sun Tran buses and South Sixth commute

A few Sun Tran bus stops are available, while the South Sixth Avenue thoroughfare goes straight to downtown Tucson about 5 miles north. Drexel Park is also a couple miles from Interstate 10, which takes commuters to the city’s suburbs. Located less than 10 minutes from the neighborhood, the Tucson International Airport provides commercial flights. The proximity to the airport can also occasionally lead to high noise levels. The nearest major health care institution is the Banner - University Medical Center South.
