A hub of its own on Tucson's outskirts
On Tucson’s east side sit the short, planned streets of Glenn Heights, a community anchored by retail and Tucson Medical Center. Despite being closer to the city's outskirts, Glenn Heights has plenty of amenities to keep residents entertained and active. Between locally-owned restaurants, parks and a movie theater, there’s something for everyone here.
Surf and turf in the desert
This side of Tucson is home to multiple trendy restaurants. “Guadalajara is a local Mexican favorite that people go out of their way to visit,” says Madaras Gallery Director Valerie Hill. Fresh breakfast made to order is practically in residents’ backyards at First Watch Daytime Café. They also serve refreshing juices to beat the summer heat. The Trident Grills and Pizza Pub is an excellent choice for grabbing a quick pint or side of burger sliders. They also serve oysters on the half shell to satisfy that seafood craving. Weekly grocery shopping is within walking distance at Fry’s. Locals can browse their selection of organic produce and fresh cuts of meat. More niche foods and sweets are available at Trader Joe’s, also a stone’s throw away.

A colorful, green-loving community
Botanists and those looking to find their green thumb should explore the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Adult admission is just $15, making it a cheap and fun way to spend a Saturday. The greenhouse’s gorgeous array of flowers and sculptures showcases Tucson’s best, ideal for taking a few pictures. Holiday light shows are seasonal and add depth to the already stunning collection. Other events include exhibits of local artists’ paintings and access to the unique butterfly and orchid pavilion. Check out the RoadHouse Cinema in the same complex as Fry’s for a relaxing weekend indoors. Sit back in one of their recliners and enjoy a soda or something stronger along with the feature film.
Midcentury ranchers stylized with the landscape
Streets no more than a half-mile long interlock to form the residential area, with a handful of cul de sacs. On the northwest side of the neighborhood sits the Camino de la Sierra Apartments, an option for those wanting to rent just outside central Tucson. For prospective buyers, nearly all houses available are one story and appear in the rancher style. A simple beige color and modest aesthetic characterize these houses, broken out into small lots along wide streets. “On this side of town, you’re going to see more historic homes,” says Hill. Three-bedroom ranchers from the mid-to-late-twentieth century cost about $360,000 to $549,000.

Relaxing parks with recreation amenities
Just northeast of Glenn Heights sits Fort Lowell Park, where locals take their pick of fun ways to fill a Saturday afternoon. Eight well-kept tennis courts and a pool make up its center for a quick dip or game of doubles with a friend. The Orchard at the park’s east edge is a great spot to walk the dog, sit on a bench, and watch the trees bend with the breeze. To the north is a baseball field where locals practice their swing. For a lower energy afternoon, stop and snap a picture of geese gliding along the pond surface or the odd turtle making its way on land. Kids will appreciate the park playground with the typical slide and monkey bars to burn off that extra energy.
SunTran bus lines ride past all the stores and eateries throughout Glenn Heights.
Walkable and served by SunTran
The single-family homes of Glenn Heights make owning a car typical, but an alternative is the SunTran bus line. Residents can walk a few blocks to their bus stop and then catch the bus to the grocery or the Botanical Gardens. Since the community is roughly one square mile, neighbors easily drop in and say hello to each other without even starting the car.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
