Historic railroad community in Tucson

Iron Horse was developed in the 1880s as a repair center and community for Southern Pacific Railroad employees. Over a century later, trains still run through the neighborhood which is now also served by buses and even streetcars. Multiple modes of transportation and a network of biking and walking paths connect the community with the University of Arizona and businesses within the Historic Fourth Avenue shopping district and Downtown Tucson. The University of Arizona’s campus is close enough to view fireworks from Arizona Stadium at home. “On a typical weekend in Tucson, you will find people out walking their dogs, hiking, riding bikes and doing outdoor activities due to our gorgeous weather,” says associate broker James Servoss with Keller Williams Southern Arizona, who has over 21 years of experience in Tucson real estate.

Original 1880s architecture and new apartments

Desert shrubbery lines gridded streets, where driveways lead up to Territorial Revivals, Spanish Revivals and bungalows. While some of the single-family homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1880s, new developments, including apartments, were built between the 1920s and 1960s, with another wave of construction taking place in the early 2000s. Since Iron Horse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, new homes and apartments must meet architectural standards, including style and use of native vegetation for landscaping. Depending on size, most home values are listed between $290,000 and $545,000. Most of the population is composed of renters versus those who choose to own. Rent ranges between $775 and $3,600 a month.

Iron Horse Park expansion project

Iron Horse Park is a 3-acre green space known for its sculptural rattlesnake-shaped bridge. Renovations began on the park in February of 2023, with plans to re-align the park’s walking and biking paths and add both a new playground, as well as space for an off-leash dog area. Adjacent to the park, vegetables and herbs are cultivated in a community garden. Before heading west into the mountains, climbers may practice on rock walls inside at Rocks and Ropes of Tucson.

Safeway is east of the neighborhood for weekly grocery shopping, while to the west, in Downtown Tucson, Johnny Gibson’s Downtown Market has convenience store items and a deli. Additional restaurants encompass the historic Rialto Theatre, built in 1919, and now used as a performance venue. Local shops, such as Silver Sea Jewelry and Antigone Books, line North Fourth Avenue.

Historic Fourth Avenue to downtown

In addition to sidewalks, Sun Tran services operate throughout town. Sun Link Streetcar, a light rail system, has stops along Fourth Avenue across from the Tucson Amtrack Station. East Broadway Boulevard feeds into Downtown Tucson and cuts through the neighborhood’s center. The rattlesnake bridge crosses over E Broadway Boulevard and overlooks its intersection with Arizona state Route 210, a southeast running route to the Davis-Monthan Airforce Base which is 7 miles away.
