A small Tucson community unified by local projects and events
The small residential neighborhood of Keeling, set 3 miles north of downtown Tucson, offers lots of area-affordable housing and a community driven to improve itself. “When I first went to an association meeting, I heard about the improvements they’re doing here and was like, ‘These people seem to care about what’s going on around us,’” says Jonni Campbell, now President of the Keeling Neighborhood Association and a Tucson native of 8 years. Since the association’s inception in 1993, it's partnered with local organizations and the city council to unify neighbors through volunteer clean-ups, annual events and various projects designed to combat housing issues.
Keeling is centrally located in Tucson and offers quick, nearby dining and shopping.

Partying and mingling at the car-free Cyclovia
Every April and October since 2004, Keeling residents have been participating in Cyclovia, a car-free event dubbed “Tucson’s biggest block party.” Each Cyclovia takes place in a different downtown neighborhood (such as Amphi or Lost Barrio), closing down several streets and letting thousands of visitors freely ride their bikes and scooters, shop at local food trucks and local businesses, and break out those dance moves. A mile south of Keeling, the art-centered nonprofit Differently Abled Entertainment regularly hosts Friday Night Karaoke and stages monthly plays at its community theater.

Keeling has a CAP Index Crime Score of 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4, and property crimes like burglary and motor vehicle theft are common; Campbell says neighborhood leaders work closely with the Tucson Police Department to keep people alert and safe through community policing. Campbell also says that while homelessness is a rising issue within the area, early 2024 saw city nonprofit The Homing Project erect 15 tiny homes on an acre of land near Keeling’s western border to serve as temporary housing. “When you have enough people who are willing to see things through the tough times, things get better,” Campbell says.
