Suburban community in east Tucson

Set about 6 miles from downtown in east Tucson, the suburb of Myers has mid-to-late 20th century ranch-style homes with convenient access to nearby shopping, dining and parks. According to Amy Cash, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and over 23 years of experience, homes here tend to be less expensive and have smaller layouts and larger backyards than the average Tucson home. “This is an established community with older homes, and the residents seem very friendly and nice,” says Cash. Myers-Ganoung Elementary is within walking distance of most local homes, and there’s lots of shopping and dining along 22nd Street. Cash says the neighborhood’s suitable for anyone, but it’s especially convenient for folks working at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, about a mile away. Myers' overall CAP Index Crime Score is 8 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4, and the many area houses of worship include Shining Light Baptist Church and the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Treats and treasures in Myers

Fast food, car dealerships and locally owned businesses and restaurants are all within walking distance of most Myers homes. Residents can head to County Fair Shopping Center for groceries from Walmart and home goods at retail stores like 99 Discount and Dollar Tree; nearby, 22nd Street Antique Mall’s the spot for vintage clothing and secondhand treasures. Also along 22nd Street, there’s chicken and waffles at Janet & Ray’s, and across the street, residents may pop into La Michoacana for ice cream and chamoy treats. The Dugout Sports Bar & Grill’s a popular locale for beer on tap and comfort food, but its batting cages, arcade games and pool tables set it apart from the average neighborhood sports bar. For more shopping and dining, Park Place Mall is about 2 miles away and has over 100 businesses.

Getting around from Myers

Route 210 is about a mile outside the neighborhood and leads to downtown and Interstate 10, both about 6 miles away. The neighborhood’s sidewalk-lined and bike-friendly, and Sun Tran buses stop along East 29th Street, a local thoroughfare. Banner - University Medical Center South is about 4 miles away, and Tucson International Airport is 8 miles away.

The zoo and annual Tucson events

About two miles away, Reid Park Zoo is home to more than 500 animals, and its junior zookeeper program enables kids get a behind-the-scenes zoo tour. Next door, Hi Corbett Field’s the spot to catch the University of Arizona Wildcats’ baseball games. Annual celebrations are held downtown through the year. In October, Tucson Meet Yourself offers a look into the many cultures that make up Tucson through food, art and live performances. In February, the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show is held at the Tucson Convention Center; according to Cash, people come all over the world to browse thousands of precious gemstones, fossils and more.

Sports and relaxation at Freedom Park

Freedom Park is the neighborhood go-to for a pick-up game of basketball or racquetball match. For a workout, there’s a weight room in the park’s rec center, as well as paved walking paths that are popular with morning joggers. The Todd M. Harris Sports Complex is also part of the park, where community sports events and practices are often held on the complex’s baseball diamonds and soccer fields. In summer, when temperatures regularly top 100 degrees, locals can cool off at the park's community pool, splash pad and waterslide. The public, 18-hole Randolph Dell Urich course is 2 miles away, offering lush, tree-lined greens and distant mountain views.

Single-family homes with lower prices and larger backyards

Myers' median home price is $255,000, compared to Tucson's overall $360,000. Packed closely together along sidewalk- and tree-lined streets, the single-family homes here are mostly mid-to-late 20th century ranch-style with red-brick or stucco exteriors. Most have two to four bedrooms, layouts of roughly 1,000 to 1,700 square feet, and 7,000- to 10,000-square-foot lots; the latter are usually landscaped with gravel and low-water plantings, like agave and Saguaro cacti. Attached carports and covered patios are typical, and many homes have been updated with new plumbing or kitchen furnishings. “Renovated and preserved homes often sell here for top dollar prices,” says Celina Padilla, a Realtor with Homesmart Advantage Group, who has over 10 years of local experience. Prices range from $200,000 to $350,000, depending on a home's size and renovations.
