Tiny central Tucson community focused on volunteerism
Centrally located 5 miles east of downtown Tucson, Poets Square is a small community with streets adorning famous writer names like Poe and Whitman along with several WWII-era-built homes. “People move in and stay here. One neighbor of mine has lived here for 75 years,” says Zack Jarrett, President of the Poets Square Neighborhood Association, made up entirely of volunteers. He says residents take care of their properties and are constantly finding ways to improve the area; within the last few years, members have planted over 80 trees along North Venice Stravenue and turned a barren asphalt intersection into two desert-plant-filled rain gardens. Along with proximity to local shopping and parks, Jarrett says folks enjoy chatting in the street and bonding at annual block parties. “We aren’t in each other’s lives all the time, but people know each other.”
Poets Square has 530 homes, with over 1,000 people living in the neighborhood.

Increase in property values in Poets Square
Over the last few years, Poets Square has grown in popularity with about a 40% increase in property value. “People were flocking here during COVID,” says Hawaii Ghedan-Radke, Poets Square resident of 22 years and Realtor at Long Realty in Tucson. “Now, we’re seeing more younger families moving in, and convenience is a number one factor for homebuyers here.” The neighborhood consists predominantly of midcentury ranch-style homes and bungalows, with those closer to the center ranging between $270,000 and $400,000; larger, four-bedroom Spanish-inspired ranch-style homes with burnt adobe exteriors can be found near the neighborhood’s western border and are priced between $550,000 and $730,000. Properties sit close together on dusty, grid streets and feature long, paved driveways with carports next to stone-filled front lawns, palm trees and well-paved sidewalks.
Homeowners in Poets Square typically choose gravel and cactus yards for low water usage.

Half a mile from the center, people can indulge in Rocco’s Little Chicago for deep dish pizza that is “crazy, delightfully good,” according to Jarrett, and for dessert, the beloved over 60-year-old Hungry Fox Restaurant bakes jumbo cinnamon rolls two miles east. For more big box retail stores and restaurants, folks in the neighborhood can head 2 miles east to Park Place Mall.

Every fall, residents like getting together for a laid-back harvest block party where people bring homemade food on fold-up tables, play games together outside each other’s homes and jam out to local musicians in the streets. The long-running biannual Fourth Avenue Street Fair is also popular with locals; visitors can check out over 300 different arts and crafts booths and dozens of food vendors, all within the Historic Fourth Avenue District near downtown Tucson. Jarrett says Poets Square residents also attend the three-day Tucson Folk Festival—one of the longest-running free folk music festivals in the country—for well-known regional and national band performances at the Jacome Plaza downtown.
