Small South Tucson community with active neighborhood association
The small, Southside Tucson area of Pueblo Gardens is filled with caring, hardworking residents and a neighborhood association that wants to better the area. “Everybody is very busy with their jobs and taking care of their kids—they’re too proud to ask for help,” says Bernice Vanover, president of the Pueblo Gardens Neighborhood Association. She says it can be hard to get folks involved in proposing projects and upgrades to the area, but she’s trying to change that. For instance, in 2023, the community came together along with the non-profit, Living Streets Alliance, to add a crosswalk, curb extension and a painted mural outside Pueblo Gardens PreK-8. Along with attending annual breakfast events at the nearby Boys and Girls Club, locals enjoy visiting neighborhood parks and grabbing a bite at Mexican eateries a short distance away.

After nearly 20 years of applying for grants and funding from the Tohono O’odham Nation, 19 new solar streetlights were installed throughout the neighborhood at the beginning of 2024, with the hope of reducing criminal activity at night. “I haven’t heard as much racing up and down the street,” Vanover says.
