Live amongst Saguaro cacti 5 miles from Downtown Tucson Desert life minutes outside Downtown Tucson
In the Sonoran Desert, Saguaro cacti grow to be twice the height of NBA players and Roadrunners aren’t just something out of a Looney Tunes short: they’re a natural predator to Arizona rattlesnakes and the mascot for Tucson’s professional ice hockey team. Starr Pass, a resort community and part of a 20th-century stagecoach trail that once connected Tucson to Quijotoa, sits between the desert and downtown. Here, it’s not hard to imagine what it must have been like to live in the Wild West, when people rode horses instead of Hondas and brawls broke out in dusty saloons. Although residents live alongside acres of protected wildlife, urban conveniences are just 5 miles away in Downtown Tucson. It’s just as easy to attend a touring Broadway show at Centennial Hall as it is to enjoy unpolluted views of the Milky Way after sunset. “From Starr Pass, you can see Tuscon’s twinkling lights in the distance,” says Nicole Brule-Fisher with RE/MAX Professionals, a Tuscon native who’s worked in real estate for over 20 years. According to Brule-Fisher, the area’s natural beauty has attracted Hollywood stars and politicians alike for decades. “Clark Gable loved Tucson and would stay at a historic ranch near Starr Pass,” she says, also adding that Eleanor Roosevelt was a particular fan of the area.
Starr Pass Boulevard is an essential walking path in the neighborhood.

Spanish-influenced homes with desert landscaping and undeveloped lots
In Starr Pass, adobe-style architecture camouflages with the surrounding desert landscape, and front yards are decorated with cacti and gravel, not grass. Single-family homes on Tiny Bird Court built in the ‘90s and early 2000s range from approximately $700,000 to $1 million depending on bedroom count, but prospective buyers will also find a variety of condo options. Two-bedroom units hover between $270,000 and $320,000, and community amenities include a pool, spa, fitness center, clubhouse and more. Prospective buyers can also invest in undeveloped parcels of land. Lot sizes range from ½ acre to well over an acre, and prices generally fall under $180,000.

Hiking trails, stone house ruins and an Arnold Palmer-approved golf course
Locals can access Tucson Mountain Park, which spans approximately 20,000 acres, via The Richard Genser Starr Pass Trailhead. The trail attracts runners, mountain bikers and even horseback riders. Keep in mind that dogs are not permitted. The Camino del Oeste Trailhead or the Yetman trail will take visitors to the ruins of the Bowen House, which was built in the 1930s and looks out over the Sonoran Desert; make sure to pack plenty of water, as there’s not much shade along the way. The Jack & George Mountain trail, meanwhile, is dog-friendly and just over a mile, making it a less-intensive option for beginners. For a more curated outdoor experience — one that involves a lot less desert dust — head to The Club at Starr Pass, part of the W Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa. Here, find a members-only 27-hole golf course designed (in part) by famed golfer Arnold Palmer.

Travel back in time to Old Tucson or visit modern-day event venues
About 9 miles west of Starr Pass via West Gates Pass Road is Old Tucson, a former film set and modern-day Wild West theme park developed in the late 1930s. Old Tucson has hosted the likes of John Wayne and James Stewart and boasts 19th-century style games, immersive shopping experiences and even an old-timey carousel. Farther north is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, home to a zoo with over 200 species, botanical gardens and an aquarium. The museum also offers photography classes and children’s camps. In the opposite direction, find modern-day Tucson. The Tucson Museum of Art sponsors a spring artisans market with pay-what-you-can admission, and locals can also stop by event venues like the Tucson Music Hall and The Tucson Convention Center, which serves as a hockey arena for The University of Arizona Wildcats and the Tuscon Road Runners. Closer to home, spend the day relaxing at the Hashani Spa, part of the nearby JW Marriott. “The Mariott also has a lazy river, and it’s really a nice place to go in the summertime. You can order food and drink and bask in the sun,” says Brule-Fisher.
