A short commute from employers, Toumey Park is a place to build equity
Toumey Park’s residential streets are just north of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The base is a leading employer in Tucson, in addition to Raytheon and the University of Arizona Tech Park, which are both within a 15-mile drive. “[Toumey Park is] very central, a straight shot to downtown, down Broadway, and it’s still affordable,” says Realtor Cindy Gandy with Tierra Antigua Realty, who has over two decades of experience. “People can buy homes, fix them up and have some equity. [Toumey Park] also has larger lots.”
Drives to the Air Force base, buses and the parkway to downtown
Swan Road runs north and south through the neighborhood, connecting it to the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in about 3 miles. Tucson’s public transportation provider, Sun Tran, has bus routes along Swan Road and 22nd Street, which tie the neighborhood to Aviation Parkway. Downtown Tucson is about 5 miles west via the parkway and Broadway Boulevard. The Tucson International Airport is roughly 8 miles away, and it has direct flights across the nation with connections to over 400 cities internationally.
Rentals and ranch-style homes on the neighborhood grid
Streets and avenues feature a grid of single-family homes and apartments. Many homes have an L-shaped footprint and ranch-style architecture. “They’re very solid, older houses; a lot have been redone,” Gandy says. “Some are slump block and some brick. They’ll be there for a long time.” Chain-link fences trace some front lawns of these single-story houses priced between $200,000 and $380,000. Nearly twice as many properties are rented as they are owned, and rents range from $895 to $1,750 monthly.
Shopping plazas, international restaurants and Park Place Mall
Broadway Boulevard and 22nd Street have shopping plazas with various restaurants and stores. Randolph Plaza is anchored by a Fry’s Food and Drug store and has national retailers, such as Rainbow. Local restaurants with international cuisine, including Opa’s Best Greek American Cuisine and Polish Cottage, are in Midstar Plaza. Nearby, Kon Tiki serves Polynesian-inspired food in a tiki bar-themed dining room with bamboo accents and totems. Park Place Mall is less than 3 miles away with department stores, a Cinemark movie theater and a food court with chains such as Panda Express.
Parks featuring playgrounds, baseball fields and a zoo
Merle J. Toumey Park, locally known as “Toumey Park,” is in the neighborhood’s center, where a walking path loops around a shaded playground, multipurpose field and basketball court. Nearby, Linden Park also has a playground and a multipurpose field. Gene C. Reid Park—or “Reid Park”—is an expansive city park with a rose garden, a dog park and a zoo. The University of Arizona Wildcats’s baseball stadium, Hi Corbett Field, is adjacent to the park’s many baseball fields. The Randolph Recreation Center, its skatepark and Randolph Dell Urich Golf Course’s 18 fairways are also nearby.
Magnet school zoning and school choice opportunities in the district
Tucson Unified School District offers choice enrollment and serves Toumey Park. The neighborhood also has zoned schools, including Bonillas Traditional Elementary Magnet School and Alice Vail Middle School, both of which earn B-minus grades from Niche. Rincon High School, another neighborhood school, also earns a B-minus. The high school shares a campus and afterschool programs with University High School, a school with an award-winning band.
Festivals and fairs in Reid Park
Reid Park hosts many local events, including the Fall Family Festival on a Saturday in mid-November and the Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair during the last weekend in November. The Water Lantern Festival occurs during the fall and includes food trucks and music up to when lanterns are launched into the park’s pond at dusk. Many lanterns are inscribed with reflections of the year, goals and messages celebrating a life.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
