Waterside living in Lakewood
Sometimes called “Seven Lakes” for the numerous bodies of water carved into the countryside nearby, Lakewood offers seclusion while remaining accessible to Everett and the Seattle area. Lake living is a big draw to many homebuyers, but there is a wide variety of housing styles in the neighborhood, including farms, retirement communities, subdivisions, lake communities and even some condo units.

Luxury lakehouses and more
While much of Lakewood is semi-rural, contemporary condos and subdivisions are popping up near Route 5. The area is growing quickly as the ever-expanding Seattle-Tacoma metro area continues to fill out towards the north. Small ranch-style houses on sizable lots dot the inland roads, and they're often priced between $600,000 and $800,000. Contemporary A-frame cabins and five-plus bedroom mansions are packed around the many small lakes. New four-bedroom houses on small lots might be under $1 million, while similar residences on 5 or more acres might run closer to $1.5 or $2 million. Lakefront living is a big appeal for many homeowners here, and like with lot size, waterfront residences are generally much more expensive than those tucked back in the woods.

Hop down the road to shop and dine
Though downtown Seattle and Bellevue are each roughly a 40-mile drive, many people do the bulk of their shopping locally. Breweries and restaurants surround Arlington Municipal Airport. The Paddle Pub, which is located across from Lake Goodwin, is a sports bar serving classic American cuisine. Miyako’s Teriyaki and Wok is a popular choice in the neighborhood for Asian cuisine. For Italian food, many locals dine at Olympia Pizza & Pasta on the eastern side of Interstate 5. Residents shop at Smoky Point and Lakewood Crossing, which has big-box chains such as Target and Costco. “The shopping and restaurants attract people from all across the area,” says Carmen Andrew, Realtor with Re/Max Whatcom County. “The neighborhoods around here feel sort of rural and secluded, but almost all the stores anyone could need are a short drive away.”

Four of the schools are located in the same complex, and with Cougar Creek right down the road, pickups and drop-offs are convenient for families with multiple kids. Those who have an interest in aviation can take flight classes at the Arlington Municipal Airport.

Plentiful parks for swimming and fishing
Forests and lakes blanket much of the neighborhood in a display of natural Pacific Northwest beauty, and the county offers a variety of parks to soak in the sights. Lake Goodwin Community Park has green space, a playground, a swimming area and a pier for residents to enjoy. “It's great for families with young kids; the wading area is very shallow,” Andrew says. Wenberg County Park offers locals a lakefront space with a boat launch, playground, picnic area and beach perfect for swimming. Gissberg Twin Lakes is close to Interstate 5 and the shopping centers of Lakewood, but offers visitors plenty of water ideal for swimming and fishing.
