Suburban Neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Tulsa County 74129
Single-family ranches
Homes in Columbus are less expensive than in surrounding areas. They start at $165,000 and go as high as $280,000. Most are single-family ranch-style or traditional homes built in the ’50s, ’60s or early ’70s, with two-car garages, little or no front porches and covered back decks or patios overlooking massive, fenced yards. Many come with features like wood- or gas-burning fireplaces. There’s also a likely chance that even with the low prices, the property has recently been renovated. “Columbus is still considered East Tulsa, and houses are selling like crazy,” Kile says. “Most homes are clean and well-kept and don’t stay on the market long.”From new parks to cool pools
Residents must cross South Garnett Avenue to get to McCullough Park, one of the city’s best-loved play spots, which recently received a $3.6 million renovation. The 11-acre park features a pump track bike park, a neon-colored playset, fenced baseball fields with bleachers and a seasonal splash pad. To stay cool, residents can spend the day at Valley Glen Pool, open during the summer on South 106th East Avenue. Kiddie and adult pools, a diving board and opportunities to rent out the facility for special events are available.Future-focused schools
Most schools that serve the neighborhood received C-minuses from Niche. They include Dolores Huerta Elementary, which offers a curriculum focused on socio-emotional skill development and positive behavior. At East Central Middle, students can participate in career tech learning using hovercrafts, drones and robots, and East Central High offers paid internships with two of the city’s biggest aeronautics firms – Choose Aerospace and Spirit AeroSystems.
Festival Americas in September
The premier Hispanic and Latino cultural event in Oklahoma, Festival Americas typically brings over 35,000 people and over 125 performers and art vendors to Guthrie Green, a concert and festival park in Downtown Tulsa, every September. The free, family-friendly event celebrates Latin American culture with live music, dancing, food trucks, activities for kids and more.Using public transit and highways
Metrolink buses travel along South Garnett Road, East 21st Street and East 31st Street, connecting residents to downtown and other parts of Tulsa. U.S. 169 runs along one side of the neighborhood and brings travelers to Highway 64 or Route 66, which both lead downtown, about 11 miles away. Tulsa International Airport is a 7-mile drive, and Oklahoma City is over 100 miles on Interstate 44.Shopping north and south
Plaza Santa Cecilia, walkable from most homes in Columbus, is an indoor mall that caters to various needs, from tires to jewelry. Here, shoppers can grab some authentic Mexican food at Casa San Marcos, specializing in street tacos and enchiladas, or shop for groceries at Latin and Asian food markets. At the neighborhood’s southern end, Timmy’s Diner is well-known for breakfasts, but they also serve popular lunch plates and burgers, too. A Cash Saver and Walmart Neighborhood Market are next door.Crime score and neighborhood resources
The CAP Index gives Columbus a crime score of 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. The closest Tulsa police station, the Mingo Valley Division, is 2 miles north. Other nearby resources include the Tulsa Community College Education Outreach Center on South Garnett, which helps students who are typically underserved discover the opportunities a college education can bring them. The Martin Regional Library, also on Garnett, offers a Hispanic Recourse Center with bilingual story times, a large family play area and Spanish-speaking staff to assist patrons.
