Country to the east, city to the west
Residents of Eastland Acres, one of Tulsa’s easternmost neighborhoods, settle in a convenient location straddling Oklahoma’s countryside and its second-largest city. The neighborhood is technically within the city limits, but with 13 miles separating it from downtown, it might as well be in the suburbs. Commuters can easily travel downtown if necessary, but the area offers plenty of reasons to stick around, whether for work or play. “You’ve got the walking trail at Lynn Lane, adult league softball games at the Carl Smith Sports Complex,” says Stephen Hester, real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Select and host of YouTube’s Stephen Talks Oklahoma. “And if you head north, you’re not far from the Hard Rock Casino.” In the 1980s, the Eastland Mall opened in the northern section of the neighborhood, offering a less-crowded alternative to nearby malls like Woodland Hills. The mall has since been redeveloped into a business complex that includes financial centers and Social Security and DMV offices, keeping job opportunities alive on the eastern edge of Tulsa.
Starter homes on quiet streets
In the main section of Eastland Acres, a honeycomb of residential streets studded with starter homes on pocket-sized lawns sweeps through the neighborhood. A selection of snout houses and ranch-style homes with attached garages, most dating to the 1970s, peek out from beneath the shade of billowing trees. A tidy two-bedroom ranch house sells for $160,000 to $200,000, while a two-story Colonial Revival with a cross-gabled roof might fetch $250,000 to $300,000. Streets with sidewalks are concentrated in the lower half, so buyers who prefer walkability should restrict their search to the south.
The road to Broken Arrow
Though Eastland Acres is within Tulsa’s city limits, it’s much closer to Broken Arrow, a large southwestern suburb. Downtown Tulsa is over 13 miles away, while Broken Arrow is within 6 miles. Flights are available from Tulsa International Airport, 8 miles north. There are a couple of MetroLink Tulsa bus stops along East 24th Street and South 137th East Avenue, but it’s best to have a reliable vehicle this far east of downtown.
Educational dreams coming true at Disney Elementary
Most houses are within a 10-minute drive of area schools. First is Disney Elementary School, named for the famed American animator and utilizing the Second Step Learning Model and a dual-language program. Students then move on to East Central Middle and High Schools. All these schools have a Niche grade of C-minus. Budding stylists can attend Paul Mitchell-The School in the business plaza on East 21st Street.
Take to the trail at Plaza Tract Park
Tunnels, swings and climbing structures at Plaza Tract Park’s playground draw in younger visitors, but there’s plenty for the rest of the family to enjoy. Mature trees offer shade to the walking trail and picnic tables, and a cooling stream winds through the woods, giving four-legged friends a place to grab a drink or splash around. A short drive leads to R. James Unruh (formerly Lynn Lane) Reservoir, where walking trails encircle the water and afford lovely views, particularly at sunset. Baseball facilities at Carl Smith Sports Complex are also nearby, but teams wishing to use the fields for practice need to contact the office in advance.
Tacos on East 21st Street
In the 1980s, redevelopment of the Eastland Mall diminished the supply of retail and dining spaces within the neighborhood, but more options abound just outside its boundaries on East 21st Street. Authentic Mexican cuisine tantalizes the taste buds at Tacos San Pedro and Taqueria Azteca, and ALDI makes a convenient grocery stop. A block away, Asian Mart sells fresh meat, seafood, produce and a selection of prepared foods. The nearby Friendly Tavern is a neighborhood hangout where friends gather to play foosball, shoot pool or darts or kick back to watch the game over pitchers of cold beer.
Evenings at Imperio
The Imperio Event Center regularly hosts live music, shining a spotlight on this corner of Tulsa. Facilities include a sizable dance floor and bar where revelers can enjoy views of the stage while sipping their favorite cocktails. A 6-mile drive north leads to gaming and nightlife at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tulsa.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
