A hop, skip and a jump from Hawthorne Elementary
When Melanie Hughes-Morris was growing up in Hawthorne, a neighborhood 4 miles north of downtown Tulsa, she thought the streets were paved with gold — or at least yellow bricks. “When we were kids, we thought it was like ‘The Wizard of Oz,’” says Hughes-Morris, a Realtor with Chinowth & Cohen. “But it went downhill a little in the 1980s and ’90s. It’s coming back, though. The prices are up, and it’s an area where people want to live because it’s close to the elementary school.” With the Gilcrease Expressway bordering the neighborhood to the south, it’s easy for residents to make their way to Oklahoma’s second-largest city.
Just a few miles North of downtown, Hawthorne is close to the action at a lower price point.

The trail to Hawthorne Park
The Osage Prairie Trail, a paved multiuse path, travels through Hawthorne on its 16-mile journey from Tulsa to Skiatook. The trail functions as a bicycle commuter link to Oklahoma State University-Tulsa and Langston University, but the level surface makes it equally appealing to runners, walkers and inline skaters. Between East 33rd and 36th streets, the path runs parallel to the open grassy space at Hawthorne Park.

Most homes date to the 1950s and include attached garages and driveways, and paved sidewalks throughout the neighborhood promote walkability.
