Walt Whitman
Suburban Neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Tulsa County 74106
1950s ranch-style homes with attached garages
A network of residential streets expands around Walt Whitman Elementary School in the neighborhood’s southeast section. Ranch-style homes from the 1950s comprise the bulk of housing stock, with some modern brick builds mixed in. Prices range from $90,000 for a two-bedroom fixer-upper to $175,000 for a renovated four-bedroom ranch. Swaths of lawn accent the lots, which typically measure under a quarter acre. Paved driveways are standard, and many houses feature attached single-car garages. Some properties also feature wire fencing, used more to denote boundary lines than anything else, as most fences are only high enough to contain small dogs. Residential streets around the school have sidewalks to make the area more pedestrian-friendly, but that’s a rare feature on the other side of the neighborhood, where the roads have a more pastoral feel.Taking on the Osage Trail
Undeveloped rural land borders Walt Whitman to the east and west, making it easy for residents to escape to nature. The Osage Prairie Trail runs parallel to North Peoria Avenue near the elementary school. Cyclists, runners and walkers can follow the paved multiuse trail a short distance south to Hawthorne Park and enjoy the playground and sports fields. The trail is also a bicycle commuter link to Oklahoma State University-Tulsa and Langston University.Be curious at Walt Whitman Elementary
It’s an easy walk to Walt Whitman Elementary School for most kids in the neighborhood. The school is a recipient of the Wallace Foundation’s Social/Emotional Learning Grant, which focuses on developing interpersonal and character-building skills to educate the “whole child.” After that, students move on to Monroe Demonstration Academy for grades 6 through 8, then McLain High School for Science and Technology. Niche gives a C-minus to each of these schools. Tulsa Tech-Peoria Campus is also in the neighborhood for students who want to continue their educations in the criminal justice or administrative fields.
Playing the slots at Osage Casino Hotel
Locals can head to Osage Casino Hotel two miles south to take advantage of the slot machines, gaming tables and lounges. Live musicians and comedy acts frequent the stage at the Skyline Event Center. Swigs, an onsite bar, also features live music on weekends.Minutes to downtown Tulsa
The surrounding Oklahoma farmland and Osage Nation Reservation make the neighborhood feel more rural than it is. In truth, residents are just five miles from downtown Tulsa and seven miles from the airport, and driving to either takes about 10 minutes. MetroLink Tulsa buses offer public transit along North Hartford Avenue and 36th Street. The closest major highway is the Gilcrease Expressway, which travelers can access by following North Peoria Avenue.Fuel up at The Freeze
The Freeze has been cooking up juicy “jumbo burgers” and Coney dogs from its unassuming roadside digs since 1966. After lunch, patrons can indulge in a banana split or order a quart of ice cream to take home. For more fast-food options, Seminole Hills Shopping Center is a short drive south. Nearby, Oasis Fresh Market offers an extensive selection of meat, seafood and produce, encouraging customers to request items they want to see in stock.
Crime
The CAP Index gives Walt Whitman a crime score of 6, including violent crime at 9 out of 10. While higher than the national average, that’s still significantly lower than the score for downtown Tulsa. The median annual household income for this neighborhood is $30,000 below the national average. Local volunteer-run organizations like the Tulsa Dream Center attempt to alter this trajectory to benefit future generations.
