Living the Dream in North Tulsa
Walt Whitman is perhaps best remembered for the phrase, “I am large; I contain multitudes.” The same words ring true for the North Tulsa neighborhood that bears his name. Though this group of residential streets isn’t significant in geographical terms, its mission extends beyond its boundaries. The Tulsa Dream Center on 46th Street offers services to promote healthcare, access to food security and educational opportunities for area youth. “People go to them all the time,” says Melanie Hughes-Morris, Realtor with Chinowth & Cohen. “They have a food pantry, counselors, prayer and church services. It’s a great place to get help, spiritually and socially.”
Downtown Tulsa sits just a few miles to the South of Walt Whitman neighborhood.
The Tulsa Dream Center is a local non-profit serving the needs of Walt Whitman Families.

1950s ranch-style homes with attached garages
A network of residential streets expands around Walt Whitman Elementary School in the neighborhood’s southeast section. Ranch-style homes from the 1950s comprise the bulk of housing stock, with some modern brick builds mixed in. Prices range from $90,000 for a two-bedroom fixer-upper to $175,000 for a renovated four-bedroom ranch. Swaths of lawn accent the lots, which typically measure under a quarter acre. Paved driveways are standard, and many houses feature attached single-car garages. Some properties also feature wire fencing, used more to denote boundary lines than anything else, as most fences are only high enough to contain small dogs. Residential streets around the school have sidewalks to make the area more pedestrian-friendly, but that’s a rare feature on the other side of the neighborhood, where the roads have a more pastoral feel.

Be curious at Walt Whitman Elementary
It’s an easy walk to Walt Whitman Elementary School for most kids in the neighborhood. The school is a recipient of the Wallace Foundation’s Social/Emotional Learning Grant, which focuses on developing interpersonal and character-building skills to educate the “whole child.” After that, students move on to Monroe Demonstration Academy for grades 6 through 8, then McLain High School for Science and Technology. Niche gives a C-minus to each of these schools. Tulsa Tech-Peoria Campus is also in the neighborhood for students who want to continue their educations in the criminal justice or administrative fields.
