Founded in 1841, Tunkhannock sits on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The Tunkhannock Historic District, recognized by the National Register of Historic Places since 2005, is in the Tunkhannock borough. The township of the same name serves as the seat of Wyoming County. People come together throughout the year for events and programs hosted by local businesses, including the Dietrich Theater. “Years ago, you would’ve called it family-friendly, but there are also so many individual activities,” says Melissa Swick, resident of Tunkhannock and Realtor with ERA Brady Associates who has worked in Wyoming County for over 40 years. Students attend highly rated Tunkhannock Area schools, which emphasize STEM education.

Colonial Revivals fill Tunkhannock streets
Manicured lawns and sidewalks bordered by a thin strip of trees line the streets of Tunkhannock. Closer to the mountains, properties are nestled in forests. Colonial Revivals built in the late 19th century and early 20th century fill the neighborhood, although some exceptions include Queen Anne and Victorian homes. As people move out of the borough and into Tunkhannock Township, they can find late 20th-century homes, including ranch styles and bilevels, sometimes alongside farmland. Dietrich Theater is a community staple
The Dietrich Theater was built in 1936 by George Dietrich to boost locals’ morale during the Great Depression, and the venue continues to be a staple of the community. Now, it does more than show movies. The theater made, and is the starting location of, a 2-mile walking tour of historic landmarks. “Our walking tour is wonderful because it goes through the neighborhood and talks about the buildings,” Swick says. It offers several clubs and classes, including a preschool pottery class and a Dungeons & Dragons club and hosts multiple film festivals throughout the year. The Tunkhannock Public Library is another neighborhood landmark that encourages people to get involved with their community. Besides offering story times, the library partners with Vosburg Neck State Park for a monthly trivia night and has a food drive where people can exchange canned goods to reduce outstanding fines.
Riverside Park sits on the bank of the Susquehanna River. It features a playground and basketball court where kids can get some energy out. People can eat lunch at picnic tables before using the boat launch to go kayaking and fishing. “The river is generally clean in our district, and people can eat the fish in the area,” Swick says.

Several restaurants in town are locally owned, including Twigs Cafe, which serves Italian food. If someone is looking for a quick meal, there is a McDonald’s along US Route 6. People can get essentials at Dollar General, CVS or a family-owned convenience store like the Tunkhannock Food Store and find the rest of their groceries within 1 mile at Weis Markets or Walmart.

Tunkhannock events bring the community together
Tunkhannock River Day is an annual celebration at Riverside Park that celebrates the environment in Northeast Pennsylvania. It features live music all day, educational presentations about the wildlife in the area and hands-on activities, including yoga and painting. There is also a kayaking excursion along the Susquehanna River that people can join. The town hosts at least one event every season, like Christmas in Our Hometown. Part of US Route 6 closes for vendors to set up, and the whole neighborhood decorates for the holidays. “It’s a good way to reconnect with friends,” Swick says. Because Tunkhannock is a rural area, these events make it easier to come together as a community.
Tunkhannock schools prepare students for life
Tunkhannock Area School District, rated C-plus by Niche, uses a four-school track. Students will complete kindergarten through second grade at Tunkhannock Area Primary Center. Tunkhannock Area Intermediate School teaches third through sixth grade, while Tunkhannock STEM Academy teaches seventh. Both schools receive a C from Niche. Tunkhannock Area High School earns a B-minus and offers the School-to-Work Program, which partners with the district’s Career and Technology Education (CTE) to prepare students for the workforce. Several CTE classes are eligible for college credit if students decide to pursue higher education.

Tunkhannock Borough is walkable
Sidewalks make parts of Tunkhannock walkable. “If you live in the borough, you can walk to the grocery store,” Swick says. She notes that as people move toward Tunkhannock Township, it is easier to drive. U.S. Route 6 runs along the bottom of the neighborhood, although a recently constructed overpass has reduced the traffic that runs through town. The Susquehanna-Wyoming County Transportation (SWCT) extends its Shared-Ride Transportation Service, which anyone can use, to Tunkhannock. Passengers should call ahead to schedule pick-ups and drop-offs, although they should budget for twice the amount of time as driving themselves.
