Tree-lined streets in Tunnel Hill
In Tunnel Hill, residents enjoy a rural, tree-lined community with large acres of grassland just 26 miles from Chattanooga. Major employers in Chattanooga like Amazon and Volkswagen draw people to the area. “The neighborhood has the advantage of being less than 20 minutes from the city while also being close to recreation at the lakes, rivers and mountains,” says Mike Robertson, a Realtor with Nu Vision Realty, who has lived in north Georgia his entire life. The area has historic roots as the sight of the the Western and Atlantic Railroad Tunnel, which was finished in 1850 and gave the community its name. “Tunnel Hill is very rural, but it has grown over the years like,” says Robertson noting there's more restaurants and stores opening.
Historic buildings in Downtown Ringgold
The Tunnel Hill Heritage Center and Museum offers history lessons and exhibitions or to check out the tunnel itself, which is located off Oak Street. Seven miles away in downtown Ringgold, history buffs can also visit the historic rail depot building that helped transport Confederate and later Union soldiers during the Civil War. The downtown area is also home to many local restaurants like Aunt Effie's Restaurant and clothing stores like the Shabby Chic Boutique for couture in all sizes.
Pebbled driveways in Georgia
There are ranch-style homes and Cape Cods ranging from $350,000 to $500,000, both with woodsy backyards and pebbled driveways. Manufactured homes can also be found ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 with decent-sized porches and lawns.
Showcasing talents at Ringgold Middle
Children can pursue an education through the Catoosa County School District, which has a B-plus from Niche and ranks as the no.2 public school district in the Chattanooga area. “The school systems are much better in this area compared to others, which people take advantage of,” says Robertson. Kids attend Tiger Creek Elementary, which has a B-minus from Niche, before advancing to Ringgold Middle, which has a B-plus and offers an annual technology competition in which students can showcase their talents in things like robotics. The B-rated Ringgold High shares a campus with Ringgold Middle and offers students an academic decathlon.
Transit services in Tunnel Hill
U.S. Interstate 75 is the main highway running through Tunnel Hill, offering access to to Chattanooga, 26 miles to the north, and Atlanta, 95 miles away. For residents without access to their own transportation, the Whitfield County Transit Service offers residents a ride to appointments, grocery stores and work. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is 21 miles away.
Civil War reenactments at Westside Park
Westside Park offers softball fields and disc golf. The park also hosts Civil War reenactments in the fall. Residents visit the Tunnel Hill Golf Club for a 9-hole game of golf, while Elsie Holmes Nature Park offers relaxing waterfront views on the South Chickamauga Creek. The park has five walking or hiking trails that are wheelchair accessible. Rocky Face Ridge Park is a popular destination for hiking, as it offers over 20 trails including a horseback riding trail. Residents drive roughly 30 minutes to Chattanooga for outdoor adventure at Ruby Falls, an underground cavern or to visit the Tennessee Aquarium, which holds over 800 species of animals.
American classics at Baby Hughy’s Restaurant
A popular grocer in the neighborhood is Food Lion. Residents visit Tunnel Vision Sports Bar and Grill, located off Chattanooga Road, to drink a beer or two and eat quick appetizers. The Los Maguey Mexican Restaurant is less than a mile away and is known for its good portions and decent prices, and Baby Hughy’s Restaurant is a local family-friendly restaurant that serves American classics.
