Growing rural bedroom community 40 miles from Atlanta

A little more than 1.5 square miles in the southwest Georgia countryside, Turin has started to see some growth thanks to new construction housing. Incorporated in 1890 and named after the town in Italy, the city flourished with cotton production and had two mills and multiple other businesses in its early days. When the Great Depression hit, it wiped out the commercial growth and turned the area into a sleepy farm town. While still boasting about 550 people, Turin has seen a population uptick since 2010 in this bedroom community, about 40 miles outside Atlanta. “It continues to grow,” says Jim Chancellor, a real estate agent with DRB Group, who lives in Coweta County. “Turin offers proximity to Atlanta where people can work, but larger houses at cheaper price points than in the city. Peachtree City and Senoia are next to Turin and provide places to grab a bite to eat and shop.”

New construction property on at least an acre

Perched along rolling, curvy country roads, ranch homes and Colonial Revivals were built between the 1960s and 1970s, and they sit on multiple acres of land. The draw to Turin, though, is its new construction. Planned communities are popping up on previously undeveloped land with new traditional homes on wooded lots, some offering an acre of land. Prices range from $310,000 to $914,000, but a buyer can expect a three-bedroom ranch to go for $420,000, while a four-bedroom new construction property can climb to $650,000. “The market is currently in a bit of a slowdown, but it is still active,” Chancellor says.

School path in the highly rated Coweta County School System

Turin is part of the Coweta County School System, which rates as an A-minus on Niche and serves more than 23,000 students. Children can attend Popular Road Elementary, advance to Lee Middle and graduate from East Coweta High School, and all three schools rate as a B-plus. East Coweta offers a STEM Academy for children proficient in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Nearby athletic facilities

Turin is between two athletic facilities in neighboring towns. Residents can head to Leroy Johnson Park in Senoia, which has four baseball and softball fields and two multi-purpose fields. Hunter Recreation Complex in Sharpsburg is larger at 54 acres and has multiple baseball fields and two football fields. The complex also sports an indoor gym, outdoor fitness equipment, and a walking trail, with plans to add an 18-hole disc golf course.

Nights at the Fabulous Food Trailer Park

The Fabulous Food Trailer Park is unique to Turin, as it brings in food trucks, has event nights, and even has a monthly Farmer’s Market. Tina’s Peachtree City and Senoia are east of Turin and provide places for residents to shop and eat. Both cities offer Publix for groceries and have popular restaurants such as Elliott’s in Peachtree City and Nic and Norman’s, a “Walking Dead”-themed restaurant in Senoia, where the show was filmed. To the west in Newnan, residents can find numerous big box stores like Walmart, Home Depot, and Harbor Freight.

Unique roadside attraction unique to Turin

Turin’s claim to fame is the infamous or maybe famous Barbie Beach. A roadside attraction like no other features several dozen Barbie dolls living their best lives, boating, driving cars or celebrating current events. “It’s a family that has a sand pit, and they change the Barbies for the events of the current time of year, says Vicki Dell, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, who lives in the county. People pull over and look at the Barbies. My daughter is 33 now, and I remember it being there when she was 12 or 13.”

Riding Coweta Connect

Coweta County offers the Coweta Connect public transit service that allows county residents to schedule rides. For $3, residents can get rides to work, shops and medical appointments in the county, but rides must be scheduled at least a day in advance. Turin is along Georgia State Route 54 and Interstate 85, conveniently located in Newnan. Both roadways can take commuters to Atlanta, 40 miles away. The Rehabilitation Hospital of Newnan is a small medical facility of 60 beds but is only 8 miles away.
