Greater Alberta’s diverse range of housing
In 2011, an EF4 tornado cut across Tuscaloosa. More than 10 years later, the tornado's path is still visible from space, like a scar in satellite view. Recently, however, development has returned to Greater Alberta. Empty lots transformed into higher-end homes, and proximity to the University of Alabama led to student-oriented developments on the western edge of the area. Scattered among rental properties, condos can go between the mid-$100,000s and mid-$200,000s. Elsewhere in the neighborhood, ranch- and national-style houses sell between the mid-$100,000s and $300,000, while split-level homes in the Arcadia subdivision go between $200,000 and $400,000. At the upper end, Colonial-style homes in a newer development sell starting at $900,000 and can go as high as $1.7 million.Competition at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center
Tennis players in Greater Alberta can bring their racket to the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center, run by the Tuscaloosa Parks and Recreation Authority. The facility has three indoor and ten outdoor courts, with hard and clay surfaces. Just up University Boulevard from the neighborhood, the University of Alabama Arboretum offers trails and gardens for the public to explore.Arts education in Greater Alberta
Part of the Tuscaloosa City Schools district, Greater Alberta is mainly zoned to the Alberta School of Performing Arts for elementary school. The school receives a C-plus grade from Niche, with artistic offerings like visual art, music and theater. Northridge Middle and Northridge High each serve the neighborhood, both receiving an A-minus. Small portions of the neighborhood are zoned to C-plus-rated Arcadia Elementary and C-rated Eastwood Middle and Bryant High. The neighborhood sits adjacent to the University of Alabama, the state’s flagship college with nearly 40,000 enrollees. “I think you can get a feel for the fact that there’s more elbow room when students aren’t here,” Crites says.Community events like Alberta Unity Day
Given Greater Alberta’s history as its own city prior to annexation by Tuscaloosa, community bonds have stayed strong. Alberta Unity Day offers entertainment and food provided by local businesses and churches. The Tuscaloosa Gateway — which offers computers, workspaces and educational programs to the public — puts on holiday celebrations like “Tech-or-Treat,” a Halloween celebration for the community. The neighborhood is just over 2 miles from Bryant-Denny Stadium, the historic home of the University of Alabama’s decorated Crimson Tide football team. Fall Saturdays can get hectic: More than 100,000 fans pack the stadium, and traffic increases significantly as locals head to campus to tailgate or attend the game.Convenient commutes from Greater Alberta
Two of Tuscaloosa’s main roads outline Greater Alberta: McFarland Boulevard to the west and Veterans Memorial Parkway to the south. Just across McFarland Boulevard from the neighborhood, the University of Alabama is one of the area’s largest employers. Meanwhile, residents can easily access Interstate 20 just 2 miles from Greater Alberta. The Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance, another major employer, is 15 miles east. Birmingham is 60 miles away via I-20, offering the nearest commercial flights from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, including destinations like Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte.Retail and restaurants on McFarland Boulevard
On the west end of Greater Alberta, McFarland Boulevard acts as one of the city of Tuscaloosa’s main commercial corridors. Grocery stores like The Fresh Market and Aldi flank the highway, while locals can head to University Mall at McFarland Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Parkway for a retail fix. Locals also frequent nearby restaurant chains like Baumhower’s Victory Grille and fast food options like Whataburger. On the neighborhood's east side, Wright’s Restaurant is a Tuscaloosa staple for greasy-spoon breakfasts, while Jalapenos Mexican Grill sits just off University Boulevard and 15th Street. Downtown Tuscaloosa is just 3 miles away, with plenty more eateries for a night out.
