A company town along the Black Warrior River
In 1901, the Central Iron and Coal Company was looking for a new headquarters, so they sent an executive named Frank Holt to scout a plot of land along the Black Warrior River east of Tuscaloosa. Central Iron and Coal purchased the site, building a new foundry for iron production as well as a company town, which comprised 350 houses and a school. The new community was christened Holt, in honor of the company executive who helped make it what it was. The neighborhood’s industrial roots are still alive today, from the nearby steel plant to Holt High School’s nickname, the Ironmen. “It’s a very blue-collar area,” says Jason Patton, a Realtor with the Patton Group of Keller Williams. “People that live in Holt mostly grew up in Holt. They hold that area very dear in their heart, and many wouldn’t leave if you paid them to.”
Holt is 10 miles from the Rocky Branch Park which has a boat launch and beach area.

Most residents rent, but small cottages start at $30,000 through the mid-$100,000s, depending on home renovations. “The older homes are very standard for their time,” Patton says. “They’re smaller homes, maybe two or three bedrooms and one bath.” Meanwhile, larger ranch and national-style homes can go from around $100,000 to the mid-$300,000s.
