Friendly neighborhood in the woods east of Fairbanks
Some people think of rural communities as standoffish, unwelcoming and rude. Two Rivers is none of those things. “Everyone takes care of each other,” says Justin Heminger with Apex Realty Group, who lives in greater Fairbanks and has sold here since 2015. “When someone asks for help, people are quick to jump in. I’ve seen a few cars get stuck in the snow out there, and there’s always somebody that pulls over.” This friendly community is popular with homesteaders and dog mushers who want to get away from city life, as Fairbanks is roughly a 20-mile drive west. People out here are living off-grid, and since Chena Hot Springs Road is the only way in and out, they might even be snowed in for a few days. Despite the community’s friendly attitude, this isolation is often what residents are looking for. The sky has less light pollution, and the dancing colors of the aurora are more visible; spruce forests cover most of the land. The neighborhood is also positioned between two waterways: the Little Chena River, which twists through the northern hills, and the bigger Chena along the southern flats.
Two Rivers is a tight-knit neighborhood that blends community and privacy together.

Two Rivers homesteads with off-grid utilities
Like many homes in rural Alaska, homes in Two Rivers prioritize energy efficiency and self-sufficiency. Most properties have wood stoves, holding tanks and septic systems, and some of these features might need maintenance or updates. Multiple-acre lots have an abundance of trees for firewood, though, and they usually have room for a stable. While looks aren’t a major deciding factor for most buyers, cabins have wood facades, and traditional homes have siding. More elevated properties are on the north side of Chena Hot Springs Road, while flatter ones are on the south side. Homes with less square footage and fewer updates range from $50,000 to $200,000. Bigger homes with renovations sell from $265,000 to $385,000. The average property sells after 50 days on the market, slower than the national average of 45 days.
For affordable housing options, Two Rivers has smaller, single-level homes.

Sled trails and Chena River State Recreation Area
Dog mushing trails weave through the neighborhood, and they’re a major selling point for some. “When people want to a find a place for their dog team, they’re typically going to look in this area,” Heminger says. “There are hundreds of mushing trails, and sometimes people use them for cross-country skiing.” These paths are easily accessible from Chena Hot Springs Road, and they go farther north and south into the woods. For kayakers and canoers, the Little Chena River is often too narrow, but the Chena River is much wider. The closest boat launch is roughly a 10-mile drive southwest of the neighborhood via Chena Hot Springs and Nordale roads. Driving east, the Chena occasionally intersects with the main road, and these intersections sometimes have unmarked launches. Chena River State Recreation Area is in this direction, too, roughly 25 miles from the neighborhood. This park is about 400 square miles, and it’s popular for hiking, climbing, four-wheeling and other outdoor activities. Heminger recommends the Mastodon Trail, Granite Tors Trail and Angel Rocks Trail for hikers. With mountain and creek views, some of these trails boast over 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and moose are a common sight.

Larae’s Breads, Pies and Espresso; Wagner’s Pizza Bus
Larae’s Breads, Pies and Espresso is just west of the neighborhood, and its drive-through is open any time of year. “We’ve had people come through on four-wheelers and snow machines. There aren’t many places where you can do that,” says Larae Degerlund, owner and operator since the place started in 2018. “They don’t really get coffees, but they have little carriers in the back that they dump their scones in.” Besides the pastries, the restaurant is a meeting space for the Last Frontier Mushing Co-op and other community organizations. “I like it when people come and hang out, and I know a lot of names,” Degerlund says. She hosts cookie decorating sessions for kids, and during its freezer meal workshops, attendees can make a week’s worth of dinners. About 10 miles east of Two Rivers, Wagner’s Pizza Bus is another popular restaurant. It’s both a red bus and a self-contained kitchen, and visitors can try 30 regional styles of pizza. The owners advise to call ahead of time; even though it’s a few miles from Chena Hot Springs Road, it's worth the drive for many people since the food often sells out. For a fill-up, the closest gas stations are Pleasant Valley Store and Hot Springs Gas, and they’re about 10 miles east or west. For trips to the grocery, restaurants and shops, Fairbanks and North Pole are roughly 20 miles away.

The association also organizes a community picnic for July Fourth, and the Community Christmas Party brings local vendors and hot cocoa.
Two Rivers School and North Pole High
Two Rivers School is just east of the neighborhood, on the way to Pleasant Valley. Graded a B-minus by Niche, it’s the only school for miles, and it has about 70 students for kindergarten through eighth grade. Its teachers — of which there are fewer than 10 — are likely teaching in their field of study and have been there for five-plus years. After graduation, students can go about 20 miles south to North Pole High. This school has about 600 students and gets a B-minus.

Driving on Chena Hot Springs Road
Two Rivers is remote with mostly gravel roads, so residents probably have a four-wheel drive car. Still, Chena Hot Springs Road is paved, and it’s the main thoroughfare through the neighborhood. It leads roughly 20 miles east to Fairbanks, and city snowplows might take more than a day to clear it after a storm. Residents can join the Chena Hot Springs Road Conditions group on Facebook for updates. People also use this thoroughfare to get to North Pole; the trip is 10 miles west and, turning on Nordale Road, another 10 miles south.
