A small community near I-20 and UT Health Hospital
The community of Owentown is a primarily industrial unincorporated area about 10 miles from downtown Tyler, close to UT Health Hospital and Interstate 20. The area started as a switch on the St. Louis Southwestern Railway in 1877 and was later home to Camp Fannin, a World War II Army training center that instructed an estimated 200,000 soldiers and even housed a German prisoner of war facility. By 1948, the base had been closed and much of its land was sold to the Owen Development Company, giving the neighborhood its name. While it’s not a bustling community today, Owentown has the promise of becoming more active with the addition of the Tyler Interstate Commerce Park, a 400-acre industrial park set to be built near I-20.

Ranch-style homes on large lots
Homes here are concentrated on the south side and sit on spacious, grassy lawns. Most are ranch-style, with three bedrooms, brick facades and low-pitched roofs. Garages or carports are standard, which keeps the streets clear. Homes sit far back on lots, so front yards are often bigger than backyards. Still, there is room for pools and patios. Tall trees are abundant, dotting front lawns and clustered behind many homes, offering privacy. Houses rarely go on the market in Owentown, but when they do, they typically start in the mid $200,000s. Regarding crime, Owentown scores two out of 10 on the CAP Index, two points lower than the national average.
