With views of open farmland and wooded ridges around every corner, Unity Township is a rural, Westmoreland County community just south of the amenities and businesses of Latrobe. Intersected by U.S. Route 30, the township provides a secluded atmosphere less than an hour from downtown Pittsburgh. “Unity Township has a countryside lifestyle,” says Lisa Yates, a Realtor with Re/Max Homes Select Realty who has experience selling in the area. “There’s some land for sale, and buyers have options if they want more acreage or would rather live in a planned community.”

Spacious properties and a diverse market
The quiet residential pockets of Unity Township are dotted with Colonial Revivals, brick ranch-style homes, bungalows and farmhouses, with most built between the early 1900s and 1990s. Some 20th-century architecture can be found throughout the area, from modern traditionals to craftsman-style builds. Most houses sit on spacious lots, from a quarter of an acre to over 5 acres. Manufactured homes and houses in need of renovation range from $10,000 to $130,000, while move-in-ready single-family homes can go for $140,000 to $950,000, with price tags increasing with square footage, property size and modern upgrades.

A highly desirable school district
Local students are served by Latrobe, Mountain View and Baggaley elementary schools. “Locals love the public schools here,” Yates says. “Young professionals will move to the township to be within a short drive of Greensburg jobs while still living in the school district’s boundaries.” All the area’s public schools earn A-minus grades from Niche, including Greater Latrobe Junior High School, which has over 20 unique elective offerings, including flight and space, multimedia broadcasting and music makers workshop. Greater Latrobe Senior High School has a wide array of extracurriculars, from jazz ensemble and origami club to stage crew and ski club. Additionally, the high school offers a selection of career and technical education courses through the Eastern Westmoreland Career and Tech Center, including automotive technology, masonry and health occupations technology.

Lakeside recreation and nearby walking trails
The township’s wide-open spaces and rolling hills make it an ideal area for outdoor recreation. Twin Lakes Park encompasses over 460 acres of woodlands, water and open meadows, with canoe rentals, playgrounds and numerous covered picnic areas. Parkgoers can also access the 3-mile Little Crabtree Creek Trail, which spans north to Historic Hanna’s Town. The Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve has over a mile of nature trails, native gardens, play spaces and a learning barn, where visitors can learn about the native species of Westmoreland County. The reserve also hosts monthly bird walks led by the resident ornithologist. The Latrobe Country Club has been serving the area for over a century, with an 18-hole, private golf course largely designed by the renowned Arnold Palmer. Along with the course, the club has tennis courts, an outdoor pool and a dining room.

Route 30 runs through the center of town and serves as the community’s commercial corridor. Giannilli's II serves Italian-inspired fare, from baked ziti and specialty pizzas to seafood and steak dishes. Thirty’s Craft Pizza and Beers offers wood-fired pizza, pub fare and a dozen rotating brews on draft. For a meal while watching the evening game, Sharky’s Cafe is a popular sports bar. On the south side of town, Naser Foods is a locally owned store selling a selection of meats, produce and baked goods. ALDI, Walmart and Giant Eagle Supermarket are also nearby. Additionally, the IHS Latrobe Hospital is around 3 miles north. “Greensburg is also nearby for restaurants and shopping,” says Yates.

Every August, the week-long Westmoreland Fair comes to town, with food vendors, carnival rides, livestock shows and a wide array of contests, from baking to scarecrow making. Throughout the year, the fairgrounds are used for seasonal events, from a holiday lights show to a haunted house.
A local airport and Amtrak access
Route 30 can take drivers around 40 miles west to downtown Pittsburgh. The Latrobe Amtrak Station is a short drive north of Unity Township and offers service to the city and to nearby communities like Greensburg and Johnstown. Arnold Palmer Regional Airport offers a small selection of commercial flights with Spirit Airlines. “The airport is a huge plus of living in Unity Township,” Yates says. “You have more affordable flight options and don’t have to take the longer drive to Pittsburgh.”
