Buckman Village is a quiet suburban community along the Delaware River. The community was constructed as a residential development for the Chester Shipbuilding Company to support the Emergency Fleet Corporation during World War I. Historic row houses and twin townhouses sit a short distance from excellent area schools and sprawling green spaces.

Here you'll find a community of quiet, traditional suburban tracts located east of Henry Johnson Park. Leafy oak trees and landscaped greenery fringe Buckman Village's wide streets and sidewalks. Much of the residential landscape of Buckman Village is a mix of single-family houses, townhouses and condominiums. The village's single-family houses are a range of established and recently built homes, from older foursquare and cape cods to newer contemporary houses and bungalows. The first three home styles are relatively simple, with communal spaces on the first floor and bedrooms on the second while bungalows offer cozier floor plans. Rows of historic twin and townhouses are also available, with spacious floor plans and street parking available. There are also a handful of manufactured houses and condos in the area, though most homes feature some amount of yard space as well as paved driveways and proximity to schools and parks. Home prices in Buckman Village range from $150,000 for a 1,300-square-foot twin house to as $300,000 or more for larger houses and townhouses.

Public school students are served by the Chichester School District, beginning their academic careers at primary schools like Linwood Elementary. The school has an overall C Niche rating and teaches from kindergarten through fifth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions such as Chichester Middle and Senior High School. Both schools have at least an overall Niche rating of a C, and the latter high school has an above-average graduation rate and a student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1.

Local parks and green spaces allow locals to get out and get active. Henry Johnson Park is an expansive green space with dense forests, picnic areas, playgrounds and athletic fields perfect for pickup baseball games. Veteran's Memorial Park is another vast neighborhood park with athletic fields and play areas. Enjoy a good book right next to the park at J Lewis Crozer Library, which offers hundreds of book, CD and movie titles and hosts various programs including community outreach services. Nearby freeways put locals less than ten minutes' drive from Subaru Park on the Chester Waterfront, where you can enjoy a Philadelphia Union soccer game and any other sports games and major concerts hosted in the 18,500-seat complex.

Plenty of local retailers and restaurants are just a short drive away. Head up West 9th Street to Cousin's Fresh Market, an independent market that gives locals a place to chat with their neighbors while they browse through the selection of fresh produce and other foodstuffs. National franchises like Walmart and Family Dollar also offer grocery items as well as a selection of apparel, pharmaceuticals and other household essentials. Grab a sub from the Di Costanza Sandwich Shop on Market Street when you're done shopping. Linwood Pizza is a local pizza joint dishing out specialty pies, sandwiches and pasta for takeout.

The Highland Avenue train station and other public transport routes give Buckman Village residents access to downtown Wilmington and Philadelphia City Center.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
