Rowhomes and twin homes that fit budgets
Most homes in Hillcrest are brick rowhomes, sometimes a dozen in a row, with one-car garages and off-street parking. Most were built in the 1940s and still have their original hardwood floors. Duplexes or twin homes are also predominant. They were built in the 1920s and often look like single-family colonial-style homes. They offer enclosed front porches, full basements and attached garages. Homebuyers can expect to pay from $160,000 to $570,000 for a home here. “Affordability is why many people come to Hillcrest,” Ingelsby says. “If they can’t afford a single, a townhouse is the next best thing.” Owners often combined first-level garages with basements to maximize space and turned them into family rooms. They also turn postage-stamp backyards into parking places. “Value is what brings buyers to Hillcrest,” says Realtor Randy Krauss and his partner of 10 years, Maureen Sexton, both with Keller Williams Main Line. “Upwardly mobile young professionals find their first home here. They like having the elementary school so close. The commute to the city isn’t bad, and you can walk to the grocery store.”Sports at local schools, the Y and recreational facilities

Drexel Hill Middle also has baseball and soccer fields and a football stadium. The Lansdowne YMCA is down the street from Upper Darby High and across the street from Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School. It features an indoor pool for lap and recreational use, a fitness and wellness center, childcare and youth programs, and personal training. Dermond Recreation Area is west of the neighborhood a few blocks and offers a playground, basketball hoops next to the parking lot, multiple baseball and softball fields, and a football field. Llanerch Country Club on the Haverford side of Township Line Road features an 18-hole private golf course, which has hosted numerous championship tournaments.Above-average public and private schools serving Hillcrest

Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School, which earns a B, was saved from closure by adoring alumni, students and business owners who donated funds for it to be rebuilt in 2012. The new facility sits next to a new Delaware County Community College branch. Bonner-Prendie students often graduate with a combined high school diploma and associate degree.5K runs benefiting young musicians and a faith community
Just south of Hillcrest, Arlington Cemetery is the site of a 5K fun run in May. Participants can enjoy live music along the race route, including ukuleles, bagpipes, string ensembles and a drumline. There are also free beers for runners. Food vendors and kids' activities are available for everyone in attendance. Finishers receive medals in the form of working mini harmonicas. The community comes out the Saturday after Thanksgiving for the St. Bernadette Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk.
