Located along the southern border of Johnstown, Elim is a suburb with popular local restaurants and easy access to recreation. The city had an industrial boom in the 1800s thanks to its iron, coal and steel plants. However, catastrophic floods in 1889 and 1977 slowed development in the area, with Johnstown today sitting at a population of just over 18,000. The city’s minimal growth gives the area a lower cost of living, with Pittsburgh commuters choosing this part of the state to take advantage of the comparatively lower-priced homes.

Important to Know
Johnstown experienced catastrophic floods in 1889, 1936 and 1977. In the mid-20th century, the city constructed river walls around the Conemaugh River in an attempt to curb flooding, but the area's geography still makes it highly prone to water buildup.
