Laurel Highland views and an escape from city life
If you're describing Fairfield Township to a non-local, you're probably talking about the stunning Laurel Highland views. This is a thickly wooded region with residential streets that wind like estuaries through narrow openings, sparsely patterned with modest homes. Buyers relocate to Fairfield Township to be away from it all, but still within an hour or so of city amenities.
Lower taxes and private landscapes
From small-town living in central Bolivar to greener, private landscapes in the foothills, locals can explore a range of getaways. Fairfield Township's early 20th-century charmers sell for around $100,000. If dormer windows and broad front porches aren't your style, simple brick ranch builds list for around the same amount. These homes are often multigenerational properties and don't change hands often. On the hunt for a secluded backwoods cabin? You can buy these rustic homes with acreage by the 20s and 30s in Fairfield. These can also be a rare find, starting at $300,000 and climbing into the multi-millions for something extra-spacious. "Taxes are lower here, which can draw people in," says Pat S., a 70-year resident. Listings tend to stick around for a few months in this rural area.
Learning through the Ligonier Valley District
Many Fairfield Township kids attend school within the Ligonier Valley District. Students can begin learning at Laurel Valley Elementary and continue to Ligonier Valley Middle, each rated at a C-plus on Niche. The last stop on the public school track is Ligonier Valley High, with a B score. Students in Grades 10 through 12 can also attend the Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center in the nearby Derry Township, where they can explore six career pathways, including communications, engineering and construction.
Hunting, golfing and dog-friendly hikes through native oak forests
Outdoor adventures are right outside your door in Fairfield Township. Residents can travel the Blairsville Riverfront Trail during their free time. It's a short, dog-friendly route, shaded by Pittsburgh's native oaks and maples. You can take the kids to play at the sprawling Pine Ridge Park, where you'll find a playground and disc golf. Take your pick of the scenic fairways when you want to practice your swing. Champion Lakes Golf Course and Resort is your closest spot, known for its stunning scenery. The State Game Lands are a popular destination during hunting season. "We have the mildest weather with the least amount of natural disasters. We've been unscathed in all my time here," Pat says.
Local produce at the Ligonier Country Market
Locals visit the Ligonier Country Market on Thursdays and Saturdays to peruse the massive spread of plants, produce and local products. It's consistently well-attended and a hot spot in this remote locale. There's a Giant Eagle next door to round out your weekly grocery shops. Ligonier also lodges a wide selection of independently owned boutiques and eateries to enjoy during your downtime.
Highway travel along Route 222
Fairfield Township is roughly 50 miles directly east of Pittsburgh by way of the nearby highway that feeds directly into the city. "Our main artery is Route 222, which gets you into the city within 35 to 40 minutes," Pat says. Fairfield is a car-dependent area, but you'll find city buses in Ligonier next door. The great outdoors is calling in Fairfield Township.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
