Beating the urban sprawl

Uxbridge merges urban and suburban living in the heart of the Blackstone Valley. With a historic downtown surrounded by wooded residential areas, the neighborhood has a little bit of everything. Located 20 miles south of Worchester and 20 miles north of Providence, this is a great place for commuters who want space to spread out when they clock out.

From Colonial-Revival to Craftsman

Home prices typically fall in the mid $200,000 to upper $600,000 range. Closer to downtown, homes sit against urban sidewalks and might have low stone walls in front of them. In this area, find four-square properties or multi-family homes with Victorian influences. Moving away from Main Street, things spread out, and shady tree branches cross two-lane roads. Homes in this area might sit in established subdivisions with sidewalks and wide, walkable streets. Common styles include Colonial-Revival and modern Craftsman homes.

Tarot, treats and takeout

Marked by the Providence and Worcester railroad bridge, Uxbridge’s historic downtown area has Colonial architecture, old churches, and government buildings. “Uxbridge has a great local pizza place, UXLocale, that makes homemade, fresh pizzas and salads,” says Emanuel. “Everything is organic – farm to table.” Located just north of the neighborhood’s boundaries, this is a local favorite for dine-in and carryout. On South Main Street, The Fudge Lady is another community staple. A family-owned and -operated dessert spot, the shop has vendor tables at various neighborhood events and festivals. To eat at home, grab groceries from Hannaford on North Main Street. Cats greet patrons at A Touch of Magick. This metaphysical gift shop is a unique local store that sells everything from home goods to tarot cards.

Home of the state Super Bowl champions

Students are zoned for the Uxbridge Public School District and can attend Taft Early Learning Center, which receives a B-minus from Niche, before moving to Whitin Intermediate School, which gets a B. These schools have a 13-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Then, they can finish their public education at Uxbridge High School, where Niche grades a B-minus and has a 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio. “Uxbridge has a brand-new high school building,” says Lindsey Sarah Emanuel, broker/owner of Lindsey Sarah Realty, who has lived in the neighboring town of Douglas for 8 years. “They have a great football program – they just won the state Super Bowl at Gillette.”

Bike, hike or fish at Taft

Taft Memorial Park spans around 30 acres of open fields and wooded walking trails, with Waterhouse Pond at its center. This mostly undeveloped park is home to the one-room Happy Hallow Schoolhouse, one of five 19th-century schoolhouses in Uxbridge. Locals can mountain bike, hike through woodlands or fish on the pond. The Blackstone River also runs through the neighborhood, offering scenic walking trails and spots to launch kayak or canoe.

Bridging the commuter gap

The neighborhood is bordered by Massachusetts State Route 146 to the west, which leads about 20 miles south to Providence and about 20 miles north to Worcester. For commuters to Boston, about 45 miles northeast, there’s a MBTA commuter rail in Franklin, about 15 miles east. A small part of the Blackstone River Greenway, a 48-mile bike path from Worcester to Providence, goes through the neighborhood.
