A secluded 55-plus community since 1953
Ryderwood – known as “The Village in the Woods” – is a former logging community about 6 miles from the small town of Vader and 17 miles from the city of Castle Rock. “Ryderwood is a 55 and over community. It’s a quiet, protective community – very small, maybe 400 homes,” says Susan Wood, Broker at John L. Scott Real Estate with over nine years of experience. In 1923, Ryderwood was the first town built specifically for loggers and their families. It transformed into a 55-plus community after the industry left in 1953, but Ryderwood Community Hall, over 140 homes and several other buildings remain intact and functional from the 1920s. In 1954, reunions began for people who grew up there during the logging days. Today, its Old Timers group fosters relationships between the neighborhood’s former and current inhabitants, strengthening the community spirit between “old” and “new” Ryderwood. The current population remains small, partly because the nearest medical offices are 25 minutes away.

Surrounded by deer and evergreen trees
Ryderwood is completely surrounded by forest. “There is an amazing amount of deer; it’s not abnormal to have six to eight in your yard or wandering down the street,” Wood says. Benches and a picnic table by the Ryderwood Pond provide a serene place to contemplate nature. The small Ryderwood Memorial Garden and field behind it also provide outdoor places for neighbors to meet.

Social clubs and community gathering spots
The spirit of volunteerism is palpable in Ryderwood: residents maintain the neighborhood’s 100-year-old community buildings, cook for one another and organize fundraising events. The Social Club hosts holiday meals and monthly potlucks, while the Women’s Club organizes garage sales in the fall and spring. Ryderwood also has its own library, open weekdays, and neighbors can attend Sunday morning services at the Ryderwood Community Church.

Volunteer-run neighborhood café
Resident volunteers at The Ryderwood Café cook meals three times a week for the community and brew coffee every morning. This dependable dining schedule comes in handy, as all other restaurants require a drive out of the neighborhood. The Tracks Bar & Grill and Little Crane Café in Vader are the closest options. Both casual dining spots are open daily, located right next to each other, about 6 miles from Ryderwood. Vader also includes a Dollar General. The closest grocery store is Cascade Select Market in Castle Rock.

Manufactured homes and 1920s Craftsmans
Ryderwood's quiet, gridded streets are uninterrupted by stoplights. Many Craftsman homes built in 1923 still stand, with some added modern improvements like accessibility ramps. “Most are two-bed, one-bath, single level,” Wood says. “Everybody out there takes good care of homes. It’s more affordable out there. It’s built towards a fixed income.” Prices range from $190,000 to $350,000, while manufactured homes cost between $300,000 and $315,000. Ryderwood Improvement & Service Association is the HOA. Dues are $40 per month, which cover weekly trash collection and expenses for community facilities.

Driving to the doctor’s office
Ryderwood is only half a mile across, so it is very walkable and bikeable. Residents also drive golf carts within the neighborhood. However, the community is “25 minutes from a doctor, so it’s a little bit difficult to find people 55 and over [who want to live] off the beaten path,” Wood says. Morse Road is the only road in and out of Ryderwood and there is no public transportation. Medical facilities are in Castle Rock, Winlock and Toledo. Nearby hospitals include PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview and Providence Centralia Hospital, 33 miles north.
