“Off the grid” living in greater Tucson region

Diamond Bell Ranch branches out from Three Point, a rural Pima County community located more than 20 miles southwest of Tucson. The area’s land use laws give its inhabitants some extra privacy, a perk further complemented by the natural surroundings. Diamond Bell Ranch’s share of the Sonoran Desert notably houses a strong population of the otherwise endangered Pima Pineapple Cactus. The protected plant only exists in two counties in Arizona and stands out with its bright yellow flowers. “It’s pretty much in the desert, but … since it’s off the grid, you kind of live separated from the city,” says Ramon Ross, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “At night, it’s beautiful. You can hear nature. You can actually look at the stars at night, and mountain views are pretty much at every angle you turn.”

Spanish and Pueblo homes on spacious country lots

Homeowners enjoy some room due to zoning parameters requiring lots to be at least an acre. While the community has some paved roads, many homes occupy sizable properties along dusty country paths. “If you want to eliminate all the city noise, that’s the right place to go,” Ross says, adding that it’s also not uncommon to hear wildlife at night. “And it’s a developing community. It’s kind of growing, but not to the point where it’s becoming its own city or town.” Homes primarily show the Spanish and Pueblo designs common across the region, and costs go from about $300,000 to nearly $500,000. Parcels frequently go up for sale and run several thousand dollars to about $40,000.Diamond Bell Ranch's overall CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, which is below the national average of 4.

Coffee, steaks and tacos in neighboring Three Points

The area only has a few eateries, which are all in Three Points. The Kestrel Kafe is the spot for coffee and classic American breakfasts and runs out of a ranch-style building surrounded by farm properties. The menu at Fred’s Arena Bar & Steakhouse includes freshly grilled cuts of meat and even thin-crust pizzas. The establishment boasts distinct decor, too, like three wood carvings of a tribal chief, horse and cowboy. Nicos Taco Shop serves authentic Mexican fare in an unmistakable red and yellow building. Three Points has a handful of chain variety and hardware stores, but the nearest chain grocer is Drexel Height’s Safeway, located about 18 miles east.

Basketball and baseball at Three Points Veterans Memorial Park

The Three Points Veterans Memorial Park is the only municipal green space in this part of Pima County. The area includes a basketball court, a playground and a pair of baseball fields. Avid shooters can get some range time at the Tucson Rifle Club on the far west end of Three Points. As far as massive and natural outdoor sites, Diamond Bell Ranch is more than a half-hour from a few of the region’s mountain ranges. The community lies north of Keystone Peak, the Sierrita Mountains’ highest peak. This area is popular among bikers and features some dirt roads. Visitors might even see the remains of the area’s renowned mining activities.

Served by Altar Valley district

The Altar Valley School District serves the Three Point and Diamond Bell Ranch area and gets a C-minus from Niche. The district consists of only two institutions: Robles Elementary School and Altar Valley Middle School, which respectively get C-minus and C-plus grades from Niche. Students may then go to Flowing Wells High School, which belongs to another district of the same name. Flowing Wells High gets an A-minus from Niche. Robles Elementary hosts several community events during the year, including the spring's Family Fit Fest. The event involves various games and gives out healthy snacks to those attending. The district also uses the event to issue COVID-19 and flu vaccines.
