Kittanning is the county seat of Armstrong, and it’s where Valley Township residents typically end up when they’re looking to grab a coffee, something stronger or just a bite to eat. Locally owned boutiques, eateries and other convenient businesses dapple this little riverside borough, as do a few national franchises and chains. For classy dining in a casual atmosphere, the Allegheny Mariner is a popular spot due to its waterfront view and mouthwatering menu of entrees prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. To restock the fridge, a quick trip to Sprankle’s Neighborhood Market or the Market on Reynolds may do the trick. There's also a Family Dollar across the street, and big-box stores are available across the bridge in East Franklin. These locations conveniently sit off Route 422, the main mode of commuting around this part of the countryside.

Traditional architecture and large lots
Homes in Valley Township range in price from $96,000 to $364,000, but undeveloped acreage is often a greater draw for buyers. These lots can range from about $5,000 per acre to more than $20,000 per acre, but lots zoned for local agricultural use can sell for much more. While some original properties were built in the 1940s and ‘50s, there are also newer homes built around 2010. The area’s architectural profile mainly adheres to tried-and-true simplistic, eclectic designs such as Minimal Traditional and National Folk styles. Football games at Armstrong High
Kindergarten through sixth grade students can enjoy the newly renovated campuses of West Hills Primary and West Hills Intermediate; both schools boast B-minus ratings on Niche. Home to the River Hawks and rated C on Niche, Armstrong High educates students from seventh through 12th grade. Varsity-level athletics are popular, including volleyball, football, cheerleading, golf, cross-country and more. Friday and Saturday night football games often bring an excited crowd dressed in school colors blue and orange.
Armstrong Junior/Senior High School has great sports programs and a stunning campus.
