Carter Park

Craftsman cottages and contemporary traditional homes
Craftsman bungalows come in cheerful colors with small front patios to wave to neighbors from in Carter Park, primarily built between the 1920s and the 1950s. Vinyl contemporary traditional homes with tuck-under garages built in the early 2000s are found here as well. Most houses in Carter Park come on lots with room for a well-manicured front lawn, a handful of bushes and a concrete path to the front door. Most three-bedroom homes cost between $400,000 and $500,000, though Craftsman homes with four bedrooms can cost between $600,000 and $750,000.The neighborhood is home to many young families beginning their homeownership journey mindful of their budgets. “The price point is a huge consideration for that area,” says Ken Rosengren, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty Premier Partnership. “The biggest driver is going to be price,” especially when compared to the higher home prices in neighborhoods with better access to commercial streets, according to Rosengren. Trains can be heard passing through on the BNSF Railway tracks in the west side of the neighborhood.
"Start Your Engine" at Garage Bar and Grille
Though the trendy bars and restaurants of downtown and the Hough neighborhood are a short drive—or a longer walk—away from the neighborhood, Carter Park is home to a few small businesses popular among its residents. Though Simply Sweets specializes in elaborate custom cakes, they also sell dessert bars, cookies and cupcakes in their sweet shop for a single-serve after-dinner treat. For a heartier meal, there’s Garage Bar and Grille, a neighborhood favorite that appears to have taken over a former garage. With license plates and witty posters on the walls, the grill serves up hearty breakfasts and burgers done right. Those who can’t make the happy hour that ends at six have a second chance from 10 p.m. to midnight, when they can save on mixed drinks like “The Muffler” or “The Oil Change,” or try the “Start Your Engine”--a shot of maple whiskey that comes with a strip of bacon and a shot of orange juice. Residents can stop by the Safeway on Main Street, less than a mile north of the neighborhood, for groceries. On the corner of Main and West Fourth Plain
The Carter Park neighborhood lies west of Main Street and north of West Fourth Plain Boulevard. Both streets contain well-frequented restaurants and coffee shops. The sidewalks of Carter Park’s mostly residential streets bring residents safely to their destination, whether it’s the neighborhood garage-themed grill or another haunt closer to Downtown Vancouver. Interstate 5 is just a few blocks away, which takes residents to Downtown Portland in around 20 minutes.Extra support at Hough Elementary School
Children who live north of 29th Street can attend Lincoln Elementary School, while those who live south can attend Hough Elementary School, both receiving a C-plus from Niche. Hough Elementary offers a Kindergarten Jump Start program, where children learn routines and adjust to their new environment before school officially starts. Attendees also receive a little extra support with math and literacy learning before the first day of school. Parents can sign their children up for multiple extracurricular programs, like Lego Club, choir, music exploration, horticulture and athletics, including volleyball, basketball and track. After Hough, students will attend C-rated Discovery Middle School and Hudson’s Bay High School, which receives a C-plus. The Vancouver School of Arts and Academics is near Carter Park, and students can apply to the magnet school’s lottery admission system to train in dance, music, theater, literary arts, visual arts and moving image arts, in addition to other core academic subjects.
Carter Park and Brickyard Park
Carter Park has a small pocket park where dog owners can bring their dogs to roam leash-free. The park also features a playground with climbing structures for the little ones. On the west side of the neighborhood, Brickyard Park features a paved walking path, a half basketball court and a playground with green space for small children.
