Cimarron seems secluded but isn’t far from amenities
Tucked behind stone walls and wooden fences, the subdivisions in east Vancouver’s Cimarron neighborhood feature a variety of houses on winding roads with cul-de-sacs. Cimarron brings a lot to the table for a neighborhood that’s less than 50 years old. Its newer houses and closeness to restaurants, parks, and schools make this corner of eastern Vancouver a great place to call home.
Developments date to the 1970s through the 1990s
Richland Estates, Sunrise Glen, and the neighborhood’s namesake, Cimarron, were platted between the mid-1980s and the 1990s. Their sidewalk-lined streets feature contemporary houses atop smaller, 6,000 to 8,000-square-foot lots with space for a large driveway and a small front lawn with a couple of trees or bushes. The neighborhood’s fourth subdivision, Maple Grove Estates, dates back to the 1970s and features a mixture of split-level and ranch-style homes. These older houses fetch $350,000 to $550,00 a piece even though they sit on larger, 8,000 to 10,000-square-foot lots. The newer houses in the subdivisions surrounding Maple Grove, however, range from $500,000 to $750,000. Most of the houses in these subdivisions have trees planted in their front yards, and a 100-foot-wide stand of Douglas fir trees acts as a buffer between Cimarron and the Parkway East neighborhood directly to its north. These towering evergreens offer even more shade to people living along the neighborhood’s perimeter and add a lovely backdrop when residents take pictures of their houses.
Cimarron has restaurants and it’s a short drive to big-box stores
Cimarron’s southeast corner, the intersection of Northeast 18th Street and Northeast 162nd Avenue, is home to the 162nd Place Shopping Center, where you can pull a cushion up to your table at Petra House for a Mediterranean menu that includes shawarma, kabobs, and cheesy fries made with feta and a garlic cream sauce. The shopping center is also home to Champ Pizza, which offers high school teams a free meal, and McMenamins East Vancouver Pub. The neighborhood is also a seven-minute-drive from a Costco, a Safeway, a Walmart, and a WinCo Foods – four grocery stores in shopping centers that also have places to grab a quick meal if you get hungry while running errands or don’t feel like cooking when you get home.
Parks within walking distance have fun features
Cimarron is also within walking distance of two parks — First Place and Pacific ¬— that you’ll find on Northeast 18th Street. First Place Park offers a basic playground built in 2019, while Pacific features an eight-acre off-leash dog park, an extreme sports park for skateboarders and BMX riders, and two playgrounds for children.
Students may enroll in the Evergreen Public Schools district
Kids may attend Hearthwood Elementary School, which with 402 students, is the third-smallest of Evergreen Public Schools’ 21 elementary schools. From Hearthwood, they’ll move on to Pacific Middle School and Evergreen High School, the home of the Plainsmen, which is just one mile east of the neighborhood’s four subdivisions on Northeast 18th Street.
A quick trip to Portland via the interstate and downtown Vancouver
It’s not far to I-205’s Northeast 18th Street Exit (#29). From here, downtown Portland is just a quick trip through downtown Vancouver and across the Columbia River.
