Historic homes near the newly developed waterfront
Though it may be just north of the freshly finished buildings on the newly developed Vancouver waterfront, there is plenty of history to discover throughout the Hough neighborhood. The quiet streets are home to the largest collection of pre-World War II housing in all of Vancouver, lined with Craftsman bungalows that are synonymous with early 20th-century housing architecture. And though the unique, historic homes command attention from buyers who appreciate an older home, their location increases their value, too. “If you travel slightly to the east, there is a downtown Main Street that has just about every restaurant, brew pub, theater and coffee shop you can imagine,” says Darryl Bodle, a realtor with Keller Williams Realty Portland Premier.

Award-winning breakfast at Bleu Door Bakery
Residents of Hough are just minutes west of Vancouver’s busy Main Street, which continues further south to downtown. Main Street boasts several local go-to's, but some of the most popular include Thirsty Sasquatch and Hungry Sasquatch, where patrons enjoy a slice of pizza and a cold one under a larger-than-life mural of the fabled forest creature. A few blocks away, baristas at Relevant Coffee have perfected the practice of latte art in a Scandinavian minimalism-inspired coffee house. Even the business’ logo has done away with vowels, spelling “RLVNT” on the entrance of the café. “Relevant Coffee is a great coffee shop. I go there all the time for meetings,” Rosengren says. Alongside their espresso-based beverages, customers can enjoy a daily selection of French-inspired pastries, as well as vegan and gluten-free options.
Those looking for an even wider selection of baked goods can enter the unmistakable, azure blue doors of Blue Door Bakery for treats baked from scratch in small batches. While the bakery is known for pastries and freshly baked ciabatta and focaccia bread, they serve award-winning breakfast dishes and sandwiches for lunch. Locals stop by on a lazy weekend to savor brunch essentials, like the bakery’s famous beignets with homemade lemon curd, or eggs “Bennie.” Residents head to the New Seasons Market to pick up their own home-cooking ingredients at the very southern corner of Hough’s stretch of Main Street.

Pre-World War II Craftsman bungalows
Though the majority of Hough residents are renters, the neighborhood is known for its historic single-family homes. Craftsman bungalows painted in muted shades of grey with overhanging eaves and small porches framed by tapered columns populate the neighborhood’s gridded streets. With most homes built between 1910 and 1945, Hough residents enjoy a house with a little history behind it. Those with three bedrooms tend to sell between $475,000 and $600,000, while those with more space and three to four bedrooms usually cost in the $600,000s or in the lower $700,000s. However, a few modern builds with sleek lines and slanted roofs designed in the 21st century can be spotted in the neighborhood.

Walkable neighborhood with access to Interstate 5
With sidewalks that line almost every street and proximity to the shops on Main Street, the Hough neighborhood welcomes residents to traverse the community on foot. Though Main Street is the neighborhood’s main commercial strip, there are a few local businesses on West Fourth Plain Boulevard, which defines the neighborhood’s northern border. In the south, East Mill Plain Boulevard leads to Hudson’s Bay High School. To travel outside of the community, drivers take Interstate 5 to destinations like Portland, which is only around 20 minutes away.

Hough Elementary named after historic educator
Both the neighborhood and its local elementary school are named after Patrick Hough, an Irish immigrant who taught throughout the Vancouver and Portland communities in the 1900s. To honor the educator and community leader’s birthday—which happened to fall on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1846—Hough Elementary School hosts the Paddy Hough Day Parade each year on the holiday. Students at the school, which receives a C-plus from Niche, join other local students, car clubs and other city organizations to celebrate the neighborhood’s namesake.
After Hough Elementary, students attend Discovery Middle School, which earns a C, and Hudson’s Bay High School. Hudson’s Bay offers the district’s application-driven Construction Trades program, one of the State of Washington’s Apprenticeship Preparation programs, and receives a C-plus from Niche.

John Ball Park—central to the neighborhood
Within walking distance from pretty much every home in the neighborhood, John Ball Park provides residents with two acres of green space and fresh air. The park features a playground for the youngest residents of Hough, as well as a blacktop and a basketball hoop. Surrounding the central attractions, the gnarled, tangled roots of age-old trees reach through mulched soil.

the public transportation is not that great here, and it is too expensive. People who are walking or bicycling it is a safe and great place to do that.

I'd suggest going to Portland to get good food and to go out in general. The bar life is good there too. There is a lot of choices to choose from when it comes to ethnic food. Plus Portland is not that far from here.

Most of the people in my nearby city are white and middle class, but the surrounding cities/towns are better when it comes to diversity. Mostly when it comes to economic status.

It rains here a minimum of 9 months out of the year; you better have a good raincoat and a pair of galoshes, and that makes life miserable. However when it is sunny in the summer it is the best and most beautiful place on earth. I suggest if you can have a summer home here.
