Image offers a suburban feel and convenient commute to East Portland
East Vancouver’s Image neighborhood offers a surprisingly convenient mixture of ranch-style and contemporary houses close to two exits on Interstate 205. It’s an excellent spot for people who commute to east Portland for work and want to live in a simple house that won’t cost them half a million dollars.
Ranch-style homes and mature trees, and newer townhouses to the south
Stretching from Northeast 28th Street to Northeast 42nd Street, this neighborhood has a suburban feel with winding streets and cul-de-sacs on every other block. It’s home to dozens of ranch-style houses that sit atop 6,000- to 8,000-square-foot lots with enough space for a well-manicured front lawn and, in some cases, a variety of bushes and flowering trees that add to the shade cast by a handful of mature Douglas fir trees that were likely there before the houses were built.
However, the neighborhood’s southwest corner offers a sharp contrast to this suburban vibe. Contemporary houses and newer townhouses that butt right up against each other line its streets in a way that sacrifices space and privacy for density. And while it doesn’t have any Douglas fir trees, the newer section of the neighborhood has sidewalks and street trees wherever you go. Houses in Image typically fetch $350,000 to $500,000 apiece, regardless of where or how old they are.
Open space in neighborhood parks and Nikkei Park's dinosaur playground
Image is home to three undeveloped parks – Lauren Park, Hyde Park, and East Image Park – that offer an open field where children can play. Those looking for something less bare bones should head to the North Image neighborhood’s Nikkei Park, which has a brand-new dinosaur-themed playground, or to the basic playground just south of Northeast 28th Street at Endeavor Park.
A standout elementary school and the Cascadia Technical Academy
This park sits just below Endeavor Elementary School, which received a solid B on Niche and placed second on the website’s list of standout elementary schools in the Portland Metro Area. Students in Image will attend this school before moving forward to Cascade Middle School and Evergreen High School, which are only a mile and a half from Image. This neighborhood is also home to the Cascadia Technical Academy, which offers specialized career and technical education courses in 17 fields to any Clark County high school student.
Charlie's Sports Bar and Grady's Public House are popular Image haunts
Charlie’s Sports Bar, which has served drinks and pub food to fans of all sports since 2013, and Grady’s Public House, where you’ll find Cottage Pies and Bangers and Mash on the menu with other pub staples, are the Image neighborhood’s two watering holes. Charlie’s is just south of the Shin-Etsu Handotai America superconductor manufacturing plant on Northeast 112th Avenue – a street that runs parallel to I-205 from the Mill Plain Boulevard exit to the State Route 500 exit – while Grady’s shares a parking lot with the Northeast 28th Street Safeway. The drive-through window at Muchas Gracias Mexican Restaurant is also worth a shot, as is the stripped-down Kim’s Grill Teriyaki, which is open for carry-out only. These two restaurants also share a parking lot with the Northeast 28th Street Safeway.
