Homes full of history in Lincoln, Vancouver
On a small road off of Main Street in the Lincoln neighborhood of Vancouver, there stands a log cabin that looks like it should be in a folk tale. With plats of raw wood that cross each other at each corner of the house and a chimney cemented together of rounded stones, the Historic Covington House transports visitors back to a simpler time. Originally built as a schoolhouse in 1848, weddings and other events have replaced classes in the historic building. Lincoln is still known for its historic homes, though they may not be quite as old as the Covington House. Besides homes with character, Lincoln boasts a location close to Downtown Vancouver and the newly developed waterfront, as well as coffee shops and grocery stores residents can walk to within the neighborhood. “It’s close to the waterfront, where there are tons of bars and restaurants,” says Jessica Kipp, a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services.
Cape Cods and Craftsman homes from the '40s
One of the main allures of Lincoln lies in its older homes. Residents like the history and the quirks waiting to be discovered in an older house—they appreciate that every home on the street has a different look and a different story. The location of the homes is another primary selling factor—Lincoln is close to the shops and restaurants of Downtown Vancouver, though it has local businesses to call its own, too.
Most homes in the area were built in the 1940s and ‘50s with one story. Cape Cods and Craftsman-inspired cottages with small front patios gracing the entryway usually come with three or four bedrooms and a price tag between $600,000 and $730,000. Smaller homes with two or three bedrooms range between $400,000 and $560,000.

Axe-throwing and flatbread in an old firehouse
Residents in Lincoln have a few choices when they want to have a day—or an evening—on the town. They can walk their dogs to Latte da Coffeehouse and Wine Bar to enjoy a steamy coffee and some light reading on the patio, or gather over a glass of wine with some friends in the evening. Besides beverages, the café serves breakfast sandwiches before noon and paninis, wraps and small plates after twelve in a cozy Craftsman house. For a more action-packed evening, locals visit Firehouse Axes, a throwing-range-restaurant combo in the city’s original fire station from 1932. After a good arm workout, they can refuel with classics like chicken wings and flatbreads. Those with a more adventurous palate can try the totchos, a spin on nachos involving a bed of tater tots. Next door, residents will find a Safeway for daily essentials.

Sidewalks make Lincoln a walkable suburb
Though Lincoln is conveniently located next to Interstate 5 for commuters headed to Portland and Downtown Vancouver, many residents get around the area on foot. With sidewalks on almost every street and a location just north of downtown, the walkability of Lincoln is one of its main draws. “When I am in that area, I see a lot of people walking or riding their bikes,” Kipp says. Main Street slices through the neighborhood, with popular destinations like Firehouse Axes and the neighborhood Safeway.

Positive male role models at Lincoln Elementary
Local students start school at Lincoln Elementary School, which receives a C-plus from Niche. The school offers multiple programs to help parents prepare their little ones for kindergarten, like the weekly Learn and Grow group. Designed for children from birth until five years old, the group helps them socialize with each other before kindergarten over healthy snacks. The school is also a part of the WATCH D.O.G.S. program—which stands for Dads of Great Students—and invites positive male role models to be more involved in their children’s education.
After Lincoln Elementary, children attend C-rated Discovery Middle School and Hudson’s Bay High School, which receives a C-plus. The high school encourages students to enroll in college-level classes—in the 2018-2019 school year, 77% of 11th and 12th graders signed up for a college-level course, as opposed to 66% of students district-wide.

Hidden Park tucked away between houses
When residents want to reconnect with nature or take their dogs out for a romp, they walk to Hidden Park, tucked behind a square of neighborhood homes. Otherwise, there is Carter Park, where children pump their legs on a crimson set of swings and spiral down a cheerful yellow slide. On Friday nights, locals head to the football fields at the Kiggins Bowl stadium to cheer on their favorite teams and players.

A lot of the houses here are squashed into housing units, literally side by side with their neighbors, but an equal amount of homes are located in the country setting of Vancouver and have spacious lots attached to them. Houses here tend to be maintained pretty well and, unless they're cooped up in a unit, they are usually visually unique.

No one ever has anything bad to say about this area. It's an area that pays one of the highest minimum wages and has the lowest cost of living. It's a healthy environment with a large sense of community.

I see a lot of clearly drugged out or intoxicated people on the bus and around town. Lots of groups of kids who look suspicious. Lots of overweight people. There is a recovery house behind thebgrocery store I shop at. When I first moved in my apartment I was convinced the girl below me was either selling drugs or sex. BUT there is also parks and a track to run and jogging paths. I see a lot of people jogging or ridding bikes
