About Verdigris, OK

About Verdigris, OK

Quiet town on the outskirts of Tulsa

Twenty miles northeast of Tulsa, Verdigris is a rural town with limited amenities that's known for its well-rated schools and commuter access. "It's a sought-after town because of the small school system," says Ronica Warden, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty with more than 26 years of experience. "It's all on [U.S. Route 66] and easy access to pretty much anything." Many residents work in Tulsa, and there's shopping, dining and entertainment 7 miles away in Claremore. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. "If you don't want the hustle and bustle of a busy city like Tulsa, Verdigris is definitely an option," Warden says.

Ranch-style homes on spacious lots and new housing developments

On the outskirts of town, late 20th-century ranch-style homes are set along wide roads without sidewalks. These homes are generally under 2,000 square feet with attached garages, covered patios or porches and spacious lots dotted with mature trees. "You'll find some homes on an acre and some with larger lots," Warden says. Their prices range from about $150,000 to $425,000, depending on a home's size and features. Over the past 20 years, new home developments have been built off U.S. Route 66, with houses set close together along sidewalk-lined streets. "In the neighborhood of The Vintage, they have walking trails and a pond," Warden says. Depending on the subdivision, these homes are typically contemporary ranch-style or Gothic-inspired with details like steeply pitched roofs and half-timbering; many are larger than Verdigris' older homes, though lot sizes are smaller. Common features of these 21st-century homes include covered entryways, multi-car garages and the occasional private pool. Prices range from about $200,000 to $500,000.

Dollar Tree and Casey's are in town for quick essentials, but Warden says locals typically head to Claremore for groceries. Walmart and Aldi are 5 miles away, and downtown Claremore, with a wide range of locally owned shops and eateries, is 7 miles away. Gibby C's South in Your Mouth is a highlight for its Cajun comfort food, including blackened catfish, shrimp po'boys and chicken gumbo. After dinner, Braum's Ice Cream & Dairy Store is the spot for a fudge ripple scoop, and Main Street Tavern serves craft cocktails.

Nearby, the Claremore Recreation Center features a swimming pool, a gym and sports like racquetball, basketball and pickleball. Five miles away, the 470-acre Claremore Lake has boat ramps and fishing docks where folks can cast their lines for largemouth bass and white crappie.
