Edgewood
Exploring 14th Avenue and local art galleries
Since Edgewood is found at the heart of downtown Vero Beach, residents are just a short walk or bike ride away from some of the area's most popular local eateries and shops. One of the city's most well-known streets for finding good eats is 14th Avenue. The outdoor patio of Post & Vine staying busy with patrons ordering house cocktails and elevated New American fare. Just a block over is Kilted Mermaid, which specializes in craft beer and pub bites and is known for its live music spotlights and eclectic Celtic-meets-beachside décor. Nearly every block has private studios, art galleries and murals, with even more to come as the city prepares to introduce more business-commercial sections to the neighborhood. Less than a mile away off Route 1 are strips of retail, with popular stops such as Publix and Walgreens. The creative colors of Under the Oaks
Vero Beach has several well-attended events, and in March, many residents of Edgewood apply to be part of the 200 nationwide artists featured in the Under the Oaks Art Show. Over 80,000 guests come to see the artisan vendors' creative works that are out for sale and enjoy the food and drink that local businesses show up to provide. Every other Sunday from October to April, the Vero Beach Art Club hosts Art in the Park, where local vendors set up to sell their work, offer demonstrations and promote classes.Historic Edgewood homes and revitalization in progress
As part of the oldest areas in Vero Beach, many properties on the sidewalk-lined streets are products of their time. The homes were built between 1930 and 1960, sitting on small lots and often no bigger than three bedrooms. Common architectural styles are ranch homes and American Foursquares, which have been converted into duplexes. "With so much of Vero, at least the true heart of town, you're going to be seeing a lot of historic houses that people have worked hard to maintain," says Eric Attio, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty of VB who's lived in Vero Beach for 20 years. "Lately, more of the homes that have been neglected are being torn down for new construction." There's a mix of renters and owners in the area. Prices trend over $100,000 lower than the average for Vero Beach, with smaller homes selling between $270,000 and $350,000. Larger styles that have undergone significant renovation can sell for $400,000 to $550,000, though these are less common.
Pocahontas Park and exploring the Vero Beach Sculpture Garden
About a mile north of Edgewood is Pocahontas Park, where residents can take their kids to the playground or meet up with friends for pickleball and shuffleboard games. Crossing over the intracoastal waterway via the 17th Street Bridge, the shores of the Atlantic are just 3 miles away for beach lounging, swimming and fishing. While on the coastal side of Vero Beach, many art lovers may want to pop into the Sculpture Garden of the Vero Beach Museum of Art.
How to get around Vero Beach via Route 1
Edgewood uses Route 1 as a major thoroughfare on the mainland. Ramps to Interstate 95 are just a few miles away via 20th Street, and while many residents have cars, this downtown area is highly walkable and bikeable. To catch flights, Orlando Melbourne International Airport is 32 miles north. For medical concerns, the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital – the largest medical center in Vero Beach – is just a mile away.Schools
Edgewood falls under the Indian River County School District, and most local kids will attend Vero Beach Elementary, which receives a B-minus on Niche. Many kids will move on to B-rated Gifford Middle, then to A-minus-rated Vero Beach High. The Indian River District provides the Champions List, an extensive breakdown of all clubs and extracurriculars offered in each public school. Schools across all grade levels have diverse offerings, from youth sailing to environmental conservation clubs and aviation programs.
