Located in Allegheny County
Verona is a tiny borough of Pittsburgh. It's not only close to the big city, but it also packs many wonderful things in a small space.
Verona is residential with houses in varied architecture along the gradual hills of suburban streets, many with two stories and sizeable front and backyards for children to play in. Some feature front porches to sit on and enjoy a summer’s evening. The median home value in Verona is 121K, a great deal compared to the national average value of 244K with such a low price in a prime location.
Children can attend multiple schools in Verona, including Redeemer Lutheran School, a private school for Pre-K, elementary, middle & high school for all children’s ages. St Joseph School is a private Catholic school that includes elementary & middle school levels. Verner Elementary School is the public school option for the area.
Verona has several spots for outdoor recreation. Go to the local Penn Hills Park for a hiking trail through the woods. The loop goes down to Plum Creek to walk along clear bubbling water and includes an open meadow by the parking area. Verona’s Riverbank Park overlooks the Allegheny River, the ideal spot to watch ducks, geese or a glowing orange sunset over the water. It also includes a picnic pavilion, playground and courts for tennis and basketball. Finally, go to Cribbs Field for organized sports. The park has a pavilion with a concession stand, a playground, basketball courts, and fenced fields for baseball or softball. Verona’s quaint Railroad Park sets the stage for many community events with its large pavilion and white gazebo on a grassy field next to train tracks. “The Chamber of Commerce is doing good work to bring people into the community: movie nights for the kids, farmers markets. It feels like a community,” says Hummel. Food trucks gather in this park during the summer months. Railroad Park is also the venue live music, an annual Easter egg hunt and the Halloween parade of kids in adorable costumes.
Verona is a “smaller community going through a transition with really cool things going on: breweries and good shopping like retro shops,” says Hummel. Get drinks in Verona from beers to ciders. The borough has two breweries, Inner Groove Brewing for excellent sours and Acclamation Brewing for a charming fenced outdoor space with string lights. For the sweeter side, go to Stonewall Cider House and Meadery for craft ciders and meads. In the mornings, go to Mechanic Coffee Co. for a coffee pick-me-up. If you’re hungry, visit Burgh Thai, a storefront under a blue awning, serving meals outside on patio seating and indoors in the restaurant too. For big portions of Italian Food, go to the Verona Village Inn established in 1983.
For activities in the walkable business district, shop for clothes, furniture and more at the E.N. Miller Antique Mall, a retro shop with four floors and a vast selection of antiques. Alternatively, take a ride to Trek Bicycle Verona for a new bike or for repairs on your old one to get ready for the annual Verona Bike Derby. To test your quick thinking, go to the Puzzle Room Pittsburgh for escape rooms that will require a team effort.
Just 15 miles east of Pittsburgh, Verona is only a 20 minute drive to downtown for work commutes or weekend visits. It’s about a 40 minute ride using a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus. After time spent in the big city, you may miss the lovely little borough of Verona.
