A fast-growing bedroom community near Birmingham

Cahaba Heights is having a moment. About 9 miles from downtown Birmingham, this bedroom community is waking up from its nap thanks to new chef-driven restaurants, innovative shopping districts and strong civic support for its roads, parks and schools. Part of the larger Vestavia Hills area, Cahaba Heights has a diverse range of single-family home styles. Some date to the 1940s, and some have mountain views. The eclectic mix results in a very homey, village-like ambiance. “It’s a growing community,” says Annilyn Warner with the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce. “It’s one of the most popular parts of Vestavia Hills to live for the younger crowd and young families right now

Home prices are lower than in the rest of Vestavia Hills

Home values in Cahaba Heights began increasing after Vestavia Hills annexed the neighborhood in 2002. Homes here today are in high demand with families and young professionals seeking a quiet neighborhood with spacious yards, large trees and sidewalks. Home prices are lower on average than those in other neighborhoods within the Vestavia Hills area – but still higher than the average home in Alabama. Bungalows, small ranchers and condos begin at $150,000 and reach a high of about $255,000. New townhomes can run to $415,000. Colonials, split-levels, modern cottages and Tudor houses round out the mix, ranging from $265,000 up to $1.7 million for a newer custom-built house with multiple bedrooms. First-time buyers can get established in this desirable neighborhood by watching for small ranch-style houses in need of some TLC, with some as low as $122,500.

Top-of-the-line playground at Cahaba Heights Park

Younger kids can get a little wild on the playground at popular Cahaba Heights Park, which opened in 2020 behind Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights. The playground, from the swings to the weblike climbing structure, is turfed by a rubber surface that feels a lot less harsh than concrete. A canopy covers the sliding board, protecting kids from that Alabama sunshine. The park also has four new baseball fields, a dog park and green space. “It’s close to the heart of the city,” Warner says, “so its’s very convenient for people.” The 1.3-mile Boulder Canyon Nature Trail in Vestavia Hills, southwest of Cahaba Heights, passes small waterfalls as it loops through a hardwood forest.

Upscale boutiques and fiery pizza at Heights Village

Heights Village is a pedestrian friendly “modern village” popular for its independently owned shops and restaurants. Clover + Bee is a fun-loving women's boutique while neighbor Lili Pad is a favorite for its playful childrenswear. Heat-seeking foodies land at Troup’s, a gourmet pizzeria helmed by award-winning chef Terrill Brazelton. Hot chicken, jalapeno cheddar and fresh jalapenos amp up the heat on his acclaimed Blazer pizza. One of the neighborhood’s oldest restaurants is Miss Myra’s Pit Bar-B-Q, famous for its in-house smoked barbecue and banana pudding. Locals also hit Waldo’s Chicken & Beer for its game nights, live music and convivial vibe. Popular grocery stores include Whole Foods, Publix and Winn-Dixie. The enormous Summit Birmingham, an upscale mall with an AMC movie theater, borders the neighborhood.

Downtown Birmingham is an easy commute from Cahaba Heights

Cahaba Heights is 9 miles from downtown Birmingham via Highway 280 and Highway 31 – but note that Highway 280 can get busy at rush hour. Interstate 459 runs alongside the neighborhood and links to Interstate 20, which continues east to Atlanta. Atlanta is 145 miles from Cahaba Heights. MAX Transit Bus 280 links downtown Birmingham with Summit Birmingham.

More than 20 vendors attend the farmer’s market

The Vestavia Hills Farmer’s Market runs Wednesday mornings from April through August at Scout Square on Hwy 31. During “Halloween in the Heights,” hosted by the Cahaba Heights Business Association, kids get tricks and treats the Saturday before Halloween from local businesses. The annual “Holiday in the Hills” winter celebration includes a tree-lighting festival, Menorah lighting, breakfast with Santa and the Vestavia Hills Christmas Parade.
