Lake Smith is waterside living in a convenient location

Lake Smith is where serene, wooded subdivisions give way to extensive outdoor recreation opportunities. This Virginia Beach neighborhood is named after the nearly 200-acre lake that flows next to it. Some of the houses here sit right on the water, and all of them are minutes from the Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area, a destination for fishing, boating and hiking. The Atlantic oceanfront is also less than 15 miles away, and an assortment of golf courses, restaurants and stores are available in between. Nearby Northampton Boulevard helps connect residents to the airport and the region’s major employers.

Yard space and classic homes shape Lake Smith

The Lake Smith area has multiple established subdivisions, like Lakeview Shores and Lake Smith Terrace. Many of the community’s single-family homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, so ranch- and split-level style options are most common. You also get a good amount of yard space, with lots that sometimes stretch an acre. Some use that space for in-ground pools, and many properties along Lake Smith have docks out back. “The houses on the water, in those inlets, are big houses,” says local Realtor DeAnna Virtuoso, who’s with Triumph Realty and has over eight years of experience in the industry. You can expect to pay prices from the mid-$400,000s to the mid-$700,000s for most of the area’s traditional homes. Lake Smith also has some condos and townhouses, from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$300,000s. The condos come with HOA fees around $300 per month.

Virginia Beach schools offer career academies and choice

The highly rated Virginia Beach City Public Schools system serves the area. The neighborhood is zoned for campuses including Bayside High School, which tops Niche’s list of Standout High Schools in Virginia. Bayside houses a health sciences academy in which students can earn college credits while learning about topics such as anatomy and pathophysiology. Students can also apply to magnet and academy schools elsewhere in the district, with seats awarded through a competitive application process and lottery. Traditional school transfers outside a neighborhood’s zone are permitted only when space allows and policy criteria are met, not through districtwide open enrollment

What outdoor recreation looks like around Lake Smith

The Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area is the feature outdoor attraction in this area. The 42-acre space straddles Lake Smith and the smaller Lake Lawson, and offers 12,000 feet of shoreline in total. It’s a popular place to fish, particularly for bass and catfish, and both a boat ramp and a kayak launch are available for those who want to venture farther out. “There are trails,” Virtuoso says. “You can do kayaking if you don’t have a boat.” Kayak rentals are available on site, and the trails stretch over a mile. Alternatively, Lakeview Shores Park provides a playground and a full-length basketball court within walking distance for some in the neighborhood. You can also find a spot to lounge in the sand off the Virginia Beach Boardwalk in under 30 minutes; the 3-mile stretch is about 13 miles away. Chesapeake Bay beaches like Ocean View are even closer. If golf is more your speed, public and private courses are easy to come by. “There are golf courses all over Virginia Beach, so that’s another thing people really like,” Virtuoso says. Options within 10 miles include:

  • Cypress Point Country Club, where the 18-hole course is open to the public
  • Kempsville Greens Municipal Golf Course, which has a driving range and putting and chipping greens in addition to its 18-hole public course
  • Bayville Golf Club, where there’s a private, Tom Fazio-designed course

Local restaurants and grocery stores are minutes from home

Lake Smith residents live right across Independence Boulevard from Pleasure House Road, a suburban thoroughfare that’s lined with a variety of locally owned restaurants. Some of the choices are:

  • 1608 Crafthouse, a farm-to-table spot where poutine is one of the signature items
  • The Rustic Spoon, a restaurant whose brunch is a draw
  • Pa’l Carajo Arepa Lounge, a spot offering traditional Venezuelan fare
  • Marchese Italian Market, a café known for its paninis, desserts and coffee
YYou can take Independence Boulevard to Shore Drive to grab groceries at Food Lion, Aldi or Kroger, and all are within 3 miles. The Aldi shares space in the Chic's Beach Shopping Center with Dollar Tree and Dollar General locations, as well as with the independent AFK Books & Records store, which has an extensive selection of new and used books, vinyl and more.

Living here means quick access to bases, flights and buses

Northampton Boulevard is a gateway to the rest of the region. You can use the thoroughfare, which is part of U.S. Route 13, for trips toward the Norfolk International Airport, which is just 6 miles away and has nonstop flights to cities from Washington to Los Angeles. The boulevard can also help commuters reach some of the several military installations in the area. The Army and Navy’s Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story is one of the closest, with facilities just about 3 miles away. It’s one of 19 total military installations in the Hampton Roads area. “Most people in Virginia Beach have some kind of connection to the military,” Virtuoso says. “It’s very common that most people around here are military or are connected in some way or the other.” Hampton Roads Transit bus stops are also available nearby along stretches like Independence Boulevard.
