Secluded suburb near shopping and recreation
Tucked near the Lynnhaven Bay, Little Neck combines a suburban streetscape with winding roads through wooded areas. Minutes away from restaurants, retailers and recreation, this Virginia Beach neighborhood supplies balanced living to those looking for a more secluded community while still having quick access to city services. “It’s a great little melting pot,” says Brian O’Donnell, a Realtor with Coastal Towne Realty who's sold several homes in the neighborhood. “You’ve got smaller starter homes back in there and you’ve got big palatial houses on the water. There are so many types of people living here.”
Georgian-style homes and waterfront properties
The neighborhood primarily features Georgian-style homes and ranches, as well as waterfront properties in various styles. Homes in the area offer large yards, driveways and attached garages, and waterfront homes often feature private boat docks and piers. Houses on the waterfront can sell for up to $1.6 million, while homes that are more inland sell for between $400,000 to $700,000. The community’s unique location and limited stock means homes in this neighborhood are not on the market for long. “There’s not a lot of turnover, people stay in these houses for a long time,” says O’Donnell. “If that’s not a testament to how great the area is, I don’t know what is.”
Legal studies academy at First Colonial
Kids may start at Kingston Elementary, rated A by Niche, before going to Lynnhaven Middle with an A-minus. Most students in Little Neck attend First Colonial High, which also earns an A-minus and serves as the legal studies academy for the city.
Shop and dine at Birchwood Shopping Center
Birchwood Shopping Center is just minutes away and offers a wide selection of retailers. The shopping center features big-box stores like Sam’s Club and BJ’s, as well as smaller grocery markets like Food Lion and Harris Teeter. Birchwood Shopping Center also offers clothing stores, arts shops and music supply stores. Little Neck offers a diverse selection of local restaurants. One of the oldest family-owned and operated restaurants in Virginia, Steinhilber’s, has been serving freshly caught seafood since 1939. Azar’s Mediterranean Specialties serves classic Mediterranean dishes in a relaxed environment, and My Vegan Sweet Tooth offers a wide assortment of baked goods.
Birchwood Malibu Park, Oceanfront
Little Neck offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature. The Lynnhaven Bay, which surrounds the neighborhood, is a popular spot for fishing, kayaking and boating. Drive 15 minutes down Virginia Beach Boulevard to the Oceanfront and enjoy a 3-mile boardwalk with ample parking and easy access to the beach. For those looking to get away from the water, Little Neck also has four municipal parks. Birchwood Malibu Park is the largest in the area and includes a hiking trail, a playground, two tennis courts and a lake for birdwatching or turtle tracking.
Oceana Airshow
The Oceana Airshow, an annual event hosted by the Naval Air Station, features vintage and modern planes performing maneuvers and flying over the city. Residents can watch it from almost anywhere and are also allowed onto the base to enjoy live music, vendors and games. The airshow takes place in September and runs through the entire weekend.
Close to Interstate 264
Because of Little Neck’s secluded suburban layout, the area is car-dependent. Little Neck Road runs south to Virginia Beach Boulevard, where most of the area’s shopping and dining is located. Residents can hop onto Interstate 264 for quick access to the Oceanfront and Downtown Norfolk.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
